Margaret Gaines/Gains 13 Michael's Hill Dublin
« on: Wednesday 20 February 13 18:24 GMT (UK) »

I have a baptism on the church records website for the above on 8th Nov 1866 DOB 4th Nov.  Parents Michael Gains and Bridget Fox.

I could not find a civil reg for this birth.  recently I have been looking at familysearch for siblings and discovered a civil reg for Margaret Gaines born 1871.  I did not see this before.  I got the birth cert and it has the same parents, same address  but date of birth 14 may 1871  ??? ???

would this be the 1866 birth but registered 5 years later or was there another child called Margaret to this couple.?   I could not find a death between 1866 and 1871 on familysearch.

Also I could not find a baptism in 1871 on the churchrecords website for a Margaret Gains/Gaines and I know the family lived in Michael's Hill until 1871 and then moved to 5 Cook by 1873.

any help please I am confused and going round and round in circles.    :(

I think more likely the 1st Margaret died, and they reused the name for a later child

Hi Shane,

I thought that to but I cannot find a death.  I have her marr cert in 1890 which just says full age and on the 1901 census which has her age 33  and her death in 1906 which says 39 so I don't think the first born margaret died.

......

the 1871 baptism seems to be listed as - Mary Bridget. Parents names and address match, and birth date is within a day of the civil birth...

Baptism of Mary Bridget Ganes - 15 May 1871

that makes a bit more sense.  I should have copped it as I had the baptism of Mary bridget,  So they baptised her as Mary Bridget, registered her as Margaret and Buried her (she died in 1877) as Bridget.

they don't make it easy do they  ;D ;D ;D

thanks for your help.

Shane can I ask you just one more thing?  please  :)

I read somewhere that no 4 & 5 or no 5 & 6 Cook street were artisan dwellings and were for fire brigade men and there families in the 1860' 1870's

Do you have any directories you could look up for me to see if this is true.  I had previously assumed these were tenement buildings

thanks

....

1868 - Cook St.

4 - Peter Sheehan, iron & rag stores  (also warehouse at No. 83)
   5 & 6 - tenements

Peter Sheehan is listed at 4 & 83 right up to 1879 at least. In 1879 there's no sign of numbers 5 & 6, or any artisan dwelling near those numbers that I can see

EDIT - 5 and 6 reappear as tenements in 1885

I have just come across this post and can't really help the member but I noticed that the address was 13 Michael's Hill Dublin.

This address (or I think that is what is written) appears as the address of my Gt Gt  Grandparents  (Michael & Sarah Murphy) when their son (John) married in April 1876.  I have attached a copy of the address.

The writing is almost indecipherable but it looked to me like Michael Hill with the number 13.  So I put the address into Google it came up with this post. I thought I would ask if anyone knew where Michael's Hill was (is?).

Also, tThe reference to the fire brigade is interesting because I have a record of (who I believe to be) my Gt Gt Grandparents living at 63 COOKE ST in 1865 and there are tales of our family having served in the fire brigade.

Any information on the location of Michael's Hill etc would be appreciated.
