Hi,
The 1851 census shows that Joseph was living with his widowed sister, Mary Newton in Anvil Street. Elizabeth Ashman nee Peglar married George, Joseph Ashman's brother, in Bedminster, Bristol in 1836. The 1851 census shows they were living with their four children at Crown Court, Bristol. George was killed in a work accident in 1854 and the following year his widow Elizabeth married Joseph at St John's church Bristol. The 1861 census shows them living at 2, Crown Court, South Green Street, Bristol with three of the children from the marriage between George and Elizabeth. Another of their children, John, was living with his sister Sarah and his aunt Mary Newton nee Ashman at the Bake House, Anvil Street.
I believe that Joseph, Mary and George were all born in Wells Somerset and this is confirmed by the census details for 1851 and 1861. I am not aware of any connection with Canewdon in Essex.
I am dubious about the 1871 details as Joseph was born in Wells (refer to his details in the 1851 census) and Elizabeth was born in Calne, Wiltshire (refer to the 1851 and 1861 census records). I assume the birthplace of Wales for Joseph in the 1861 census was a mistake on the part of the enumerator (Wells becomes Wales?).
However, I would be grateful for any information about the whereabouts of Joseph and Elizabeth in 1871, assuming they are still alive.
