Thanks for the 1851 census info. However I am not convinced this is my Mary as I would have expected her to be younger than 16, in light of all the other information I have. gillm

Yes I dont think that is the right one either. On the 1851 there are two Marys both born 1837 in Wem the one Brevitas found and another who is a visitor in the household of William Hell and family (think this is supposed to be Hill) interestingly his wife Elizabeth is also born in Wem

I don't know whether you saw the other thread, but Veeblevort made an excellent suggestion regarding the odd spelling of "Wem".

This census return is for Liverpool not Shropshire, so the writer
may not have heard of Wem. Note also that this writer does not
dot his 'i's. See RG09/2685/100/50.

Where were you born?
Answer 'Wem in Shropshire'.
Writes down 'Wemin  Shropshire'.

vv.

I have found the other Mary Williams born 1837 Wem down as William on the 1841

all born in county

Edward Williams 40
Thomas Williams 45
Ann Wlliams 60
John Richard 7
Mary Willams 4

HO107/902/9

There is also a May (which could be Mary) Williams next door aged 3 with parents John and Ann

Thanks everyone for all the information and the interesting suggestion about the spelling of Wem. Mary's father was recorded as James on the marriage record and assuming this to be correct wouldn't fit with parents John and Ann and not sure about the other family. It is possible that one or both parents had died and that she was with grandparents or other relatives?

I wondered that too I have been through all the James Williams in Wem and none of them have a daughter called Mary of the right age. My other thought was that she was illigitimate and her mother married someone else not long after her birth
