Mary Ann HARRINGTON born Gosfield
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 04:14 GMT (UK) »
I have been doing research for some years and I always thought that my 2 x Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Tyler was born around 1844 in Gosfield and that her parents were James Harrington, born Wethersfield around 1815 and Mary Ann Tyler.

Recently I have discovered via Public Trees on Ancestry.co.uk that this Mary Ann Harrington married someone by the name of Gilbey.  I have the marriage certificate of my Mary Ann Harrington, who married a James Clarke in Wethersfield in 1868.  Her age is shown as 22 years, making her year of birth aorund 1846.  I have also found a marriage between a James Harrington and a Marianne Turner in the 4th quarter of 1845 in the Halstead District, which covers Gosfield.

Has any one got access to Parish Records and can confirm Mary Ann Harrington's parents?
Unfortunately Mary Ann was a common name among Harrington's.

St. Catherine, Gosfield

Mary Ann Harrington
born 16th October, 1847
baptised November 21st, 1847
dau of James and Maryann
father a labourer

also to above

Richard bap February 10th, 1850
Samuel bap September 5th, 1852

I think you are correct with the Harrington/Tyler marriage as there is a Tyler son with the family in 1851. So did Mary Ann have a child before marriage?

The marriage in Wethersfield in 1838 has Mary Ann as a spinster.

Thanks for the info Suffolk Sue.  That would seem to be my Mary Ann Harrington.  Unfortunately I still can't confirm that were parents were the James Harrington and Marianne Turner, who married in 1845, although it is likely that is the case.

To add to my woes, the Richard and Samuel you mention, I have down as children of James Harrington and Mary Ann Tyler !!  I guess I will have to sent to the UK for Mary Ann Harrington's birth certificate.

Hi Dave,

The Batch of marriages in the Dec quarter 1845 Halstead (vol 12page 227) gives a permutation of 4 brides and 4 grooms. The parish question is Toppesfield and the actual partners were James Harrington marrying Elizabeth Russell and William Barnard marrying Marianne Turner.
I know it does not help you in a positive sense but does eliminate this particular James and Mary.

Hi Mike

Thanks for that info, which as you say, doesn't help me.  The question now is who is the Maryann/Marianne who married James Harrington and had a daughter named Mary Ann; born 1847?

Marianne Turner is the only person to appear on the same marriage page as a James Harrington, other than a Mary Ann Sewell in 1842 in the Dunmow Registration District.  I think I'll have to get the birth certificate of Mary Ann Harrington and hope that it will show the mothers maiden name.

Thanks for your help.

Dave,

A search of the 1851 & 1861 census shows only one Mary Ann Harrington born in Gosfield - the one with James and and Mary Ann Tyler as parents.

Does the entry on the ancestry public tree which is giving you doubts give any source that you can check (ie date and place of marriage) . It is possible that the tree could be wrong.

Dave,

I have looked a bit further and have a stronger feeling that the Tyler assumption is correct.

The 1871 census shows James and Mary Clarke - James born Wethersfield, Mary born Gosfield -
they have as a lodger Richard Harrington born Gosfield. Mary Ann (of Harrington/Tiler descent) had a brother Richard born Gosfield - no other Richard Harringtons born Gosfield. Circumstantial but quite strong evidence.
The Mary Harrington who married Thomas Gilby was born in Wethersfield (possibly to a single mother).

Dave,

Final bit to the jigsaw I hope.

21/09/1867 married at Finchingfield Thomas Gilby to Mary Ann Harrington. No father entered for Mary Ann -ties up to my last post (born to single mother).
I think a lot of Root chatters will agree - never believe other peoples trees without doing your own checks - it is so easy to carry on the errors. I hope the birth certificate will prove everything conclusively.
