Moss Rose/The Post Office Hotel Stockport
« on: Saturday 16 February 13 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have an info on the two pubs above? My Great x2 Grandma was the publican at the Moss Rose (31-33+35 Travis Brow) in 1901 and then moved to The Post Office Hotel, Embden Street by 1911 census when her daughter Alice Holehouse was licencee. Are these pubs still there? What brewery was it? How would i get to understand if they owned or were tenants?
Any help, memories appreciated

Hi Jeanie,

I can’t help you with the Post Office Hotel it was in Hulme, Manchester not Stockport.

I have found a little bit of info regarding the Moss Rose, Travis Brow.
It was a beer house in 1853 and closed in 1971. It was thought to be a venue for gardeners from the nearby Moss Rose Lodge. When it closed in 1971 the licence was transferred to the Moss Rose in Didsbury.
I haven’t been up that way in years and can’t swear to it but I seem to remember that most of the buildings on Travis Brow were demolished when the Motorway was being built.
There is a photograph of the pub taken in 1971 advertising Hydes Beer and you can find it on the Stockport Images Archive website just put Travis Brow in the search box.

As Hydes Brewery are still in existence and presumably have archives it might be worth your while contacting them.
