Bangor Abbey graveyard - McCulloch
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 15:35 GMT (UK) »
I've found reference on the Bangor Abbey website to a very badly flaked sandstone headstone for"  ....... McCulloch, born at Dalmellington, Ayrshire 3rd Feb 1817, died at Bangor 2nd Jan 1883", but it describes the inscription as now almost completely lost.
Does anyone know of any other, perhaps older, sources which might have fuller details of what the inscription originally read, or who was buried in the grave to which it refers?
Any help will be much appreciated.

GRONI will have the death certificate but not the gravestone inscription or a list of other burials in the plot. See here to register, purchase credits for searching & viewing the death certificate, etc.

There are a series of books with gravestone inscriptions done a number of years ago so the details might have been recorded when the stone was more legible.

Some lovely photos of Bangor Abbey gravestones here but I can't see the one you mention-

Wonder what the connection to Kllys (if any) might be-

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've only just checked Rootschat again, and found them.

I've managed to get hold of a copy of Vol 17 of the Graveyard Inscriptions, but it contains the same information about the badly flaked headstones, and that was in 1978, so I don't think I'm probably going to be able to improve on that.
There's a connection with the Kelly headstone, but I haven't been able to work it all out yet. William McCulloch married Mary Crosbie, daughter of William Crosbie, and on another inscription, for Robert Crosbie, he is referred to as the nephew of Alexander Kelly, and the son of William Crosbie. I need to go back another generation in the Crosbie line, and particularly find out what William Crosbie's wife Agnes' maiden name was.

Thanks for your help.

http://www.failteromhat.com

In the civil parish of Bangor in 1863, using the spelling of McCullough we have 27 entries and for Kelly 16 entries some are as landlord etc  Listed in Griffiths valuation see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index
however a short cut is take the county index that shows townlands etc see http://www.failteromhat.com

Kelly   Anne   Ballyfree   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   James      Ballymaconnell   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Hugh      Ballysallagh Major   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Edward   Ballysallagh Minor   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas S.   Ballyvarnet   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas S.   Corporation   Bangor   Down
Kelly   Thomas      Cotton   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullough   Samuel   Crawfordsburn,(Ballymullan)   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Robert      Gransha   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   John      Gransha   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas   Gransha   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   James      Gransha   Bangor   Down
Kelly   Eliza         Main Street,Groomsport   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas   Portavoe   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas S.   Rathgill   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullagh   Thomas S.   Rathgill   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullough   Anne      Upper Row,Groomsport   Bangor   Down
Mc Cullough   John      Village of Conlig   Bangor   Down

sadly I found no trace of Crosby in Griffiths in Bangor.   So finally spotting a  match by close location I am hoping the luck of the irish might suggest the they have something to do with Groomsport  in the civil parish of Bangor,  who population did use Bangor Abbey for some burials

The irish times ancestry page , recently changed to https://www.johngrenham.com gives a short but important list of spelling variants found which is far from the two spellings I have only used, my time ran out and a subscription was suggested. if you are not used to spelling variants , its all part of the norm including enumerators background.

The Tithes Applotment books are not complete for Bangor it only includes a townland or two see http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/bangor-parish.php#.V1HW2leoc5R The originals are in the PRONI Belfast,  Parts might exist if there are Bangor papers etc at PRONI

if you haven’t used http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies m, I strongly advise you to exhaust it
I had a peep fpr Crosby and started to find Bangor coming up in the parish column
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/C/CrocCrot.htm#cror

good luck onwards
