Lookup Request - Death of Jessie Young TAIT
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 23:46 GMT (UK) »
Seeking data regarding demise of following lady who entered Canada twice;
Jessie Young TAIT (b. 05 Mar 1904, Burntisland, Fife, Scotland d. unknown, probably Canada).  First arrival 17 Aug 1930.

Second Arrival 07 Sep 1935. Previously been in Canada Aug 1930 - June 1935 at 16 Garfield Avenue. Toronto, Ontario. Employer Mrs J Robertson of 16 Garfield Avenue, Toronto, Ontario.  She did not return to Scotland.

I seek ANY data relating to her demise as her mother and illegitimate daughter (in Scotland) succumbed to Breast Cancer.  My sisters are concerned there may be a hereditary gene in the line.

Jessie Tait gave her sister, Mary Tait, of of Burntisland as her nearest British contact on the 1930 sailing to Canada.
On the 1935 sailing to Canada her nearest British contact was initially entered as James Tait and then crossed off with the notation that there were no British contacts - all were in Canada.

Mary Tait came to Canada on the Athenia arriving May 1931.  She was going to her sister, Jessie Tait, c/o Robertson 16 Garfield Ave. Toronto.  Brother James Tait c/o Butterfield, Union St. Burntisland was her nearest British contact
James Tait, 26, joiner, came to Canada June 1932 on the Ascania.  His Canadian contact was siter Mary Tait of 43 Strathmore Blvd. Toronto and British contact was a friend, William Butterfield, of Union St. Burntisland.

All of these Tait's seem to be related.  Is this definitely the Jessie Tait you're looking for?

The Toronto Star - Pages of the Past is a pay site for the Toronto paper but very reasonable and short or long term rates.  It would be a starting point to look for BMDs for this family as marriages and deaths in this time period in Ontario would be protected under privacy laws.

Thanks cosmic, I have all that data. Yes, they were all siblings. Eldest sister Catherine Ann had already relocated to USA.

Thanks again.

P.S. "Marriages and Deaths in this time period in Ontario would be protected under privacy laws". Hypothetical question! Why so, if similar data is available from a newspaper on-line source AND such individuals would be in excess of 100 years OR MORE LIKELY probably deceased? I could cheerfully throttle the "shiny-bums" who dream up half-baked restrictions to thwart genuine genealogists?  >:(

Each province in Canada sets their own standards as to when they release BMD information from their Vital Statistics records.  Their are variances but generally births are not publically available for 100 years and marriages for 80.  In Ontario deaths past 1938 are not available on ancestry.ca but 1939 is available at the Ontario Archives site in Toronto.  It has nothing to do with what is published in newspapers and that's why we depend on those sources for more recent information.

I just wanted to make sure that you were chasing the right Jessie Tait as I had the impression from your posting that she had surviving family in Scotland and yet this Jessie seemed not to.

Voters lists have been published on ancestry for 1935-1980 but there are many choices for Jessie and Mary Tait.  There does seem to be a match for a James Tait, carpenter, in the Trinity ward of Toronto in 1935 but I can't find another James Tait with matching profession in later years.
