Looking for Any details on Charles Henry POFFLEY Died Plymouth 1958
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 21:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi There,
Is there anyone who could provide me with some help on where my Great Grandfather was Buried/Cremated.
His Death record states he died in Plymouth, Devon 1958 at age 69.

He was born in Woolwich, Kent, and Lived most of his life in Maidstone, Kent with My Great Grandmother,Margaret Agnes Rose Poffley (nee Glasgo), until she died in 1949.
He Then Married an Ethel Seers in Tonbridge, Kent, England in 1954, and then i have no info on his life until his death.
I hope someone could help please.

Ethel Annie Poffley, born in 1889, died in St Germans reg dist in Cornwall in 1972, aged 82.

I wonder whether any living family of hers might remember your gr-grfather?

The problem is that I can't find either the birth of an Ethel A Seers or the marriage of an Ethel to a Seers, to look for children of a previous marriage (not to post here of course if they might be living).

An Ethel (Sims) Seers married Alfred Seers 1910 in Chelsea - they seem to have had two children.

The only death that looks likely for Alfred was 1955 Chelsea (aged 85 which matches a birth 1870 Westminster). A year before "your" Ethel married your gr-grfather. ... Never mind, that Ethel Seers died in 1976 in Chelsea. Ruled out.

That's a conundrum. But if you could identify Ethel -- your gr-grfather's marriage certificate would tell you her age and father's name and any previous married names -- you might well be able to find family of hers who might have known your gr-grfather. Also, it's possible that there would be the name of a family member of hers on her death certificate.

This little conundrum played on my mind, and believe it or not I think I have worked it out.

Ethel A Humphries married Alfred J Spurrell in 1911 in Devonport.
- two children with mother's surname Humphreys born 1914 Devonport.
- child with mother's surname Humphries born 1916 St Germans
- child with mother's surname Humphry born 1921 St Germans.
Alfred J (John) Spurrell (1879 Plymouth) died in 1938 in Plymouth.
(in 1911 he was in Devonport)

Ethel Spurrell married William Seers in 1946 in St Germans.
William Seers (1891 Tewkesbury?) died in 1952 in Tonbridge.

Ethel Annie Seers married Charles Henry Poffley in 1954 in Tonbridge.
Charles Henry Poffley died in 1958 in Plymouth.
Ethel Annie Poffley born c1889 died in 1972 in St Germans, dob 7 October 1889.

And now to figure out who Ethel was.

An Ethel Annie Humphrys birth was registered in December quarter 1885 in Cardiff and I wonder whether that wasn't her, perhaps being a little conservative with the truth about her age since her second and third husbands were younger than she was (or the informant knew her birthday, October 7, but not the year, as is not uncommon).

In 1891 (Humphery) that Ethel is in Cardiff and in 1901 (Humphries) she is in Bristol. In 1911 she eludes me.

Ethel Annie Humphrys is in an Ancestry/Mundia tree but the only info is her birth and parents/siblings, confirming the info I found but not giving any info after 1901 either. The tree does not trace descendants of any of her siblings either and it seems the owner's relationship is through a sibling of Ethel's mother.

I have found info about her descendants and would PM it if flintlock1 acknowledges receiving these replies.

Hi Flintlock

Plymouth council have cemetery and crematoria information here

http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/homepage/communityandliving/deathandbereavement/cemeteriesandcrematoria.htm

and a search form here

http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/grave_search.pdf

It looks like they make a charge for look-ups as a lot of local authorities now do.

I would suggest looking on a map and seeing which cemetery/crematorium might be closest to the last address on the death cert. If you haven't got the death cert, you'll need it to make an application to the council. There are just too many deaths per quarter for them to randomly look through their records.

Hope this helps.

Hi JaneyCanuck,

Many thanks for replying to my post, i think that what you have found out is fantastic, and many thanks to you.
I think that very soon, i will have to get Ethel and Charles Henry's Marriage certificates, and both there death certificates too, to help tie up some of the mystery of why they were so far from there homes when they died. Perhaps its just a simple fact that they retired to the west country maybe?.
I have been through some of the online databases of burial sites, but cannot trace where they were Buried/cremated.
I would like to be able to visit the cemetery or resting place of them both sometime, if the information could be found out.

Many, Many thanks in anticipation of anything you can find out.

PM sent! I've included direct contact info for a grandchild of Ethel Humphrys Spurrell Seers Poffley, as she seems to have been. :)

Hopefully, one of her grandchildren will remember your great-grandfather and have information that would at least lead to finding out where he is buried.
