Sheppard A JONES New York East 69 Street
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 15:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to establish if the Sheppard A Jones and his wife Sarah listed in 1940 census are related to me. My Sheppard was Born 1871 Ballbrennan, Wexford Ireland to father Robert Disney Jones and mother Sarah Spencer Cooke. I do not have any records of a move to America.

They show up on Census of 1910 in Rockland New York, 1920 in New York and in the 1940 census at house 323 on East 69 Street.

I have 5 chrildren, Sarah (B1907), Robert (B1908), Mary (B1912), Albert (B1914) and Charles (B1916).

Does anyone have information on how I could find death records and if these record the father/ mother's name in the US. Any other assistance would be most welcome.

Regards

1910 census says arrived in U.S. 1896- and wife in 1895 so likely married in U.S.:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MPBY-Q1L

Checking N.Y. marriage index shows this record:
Sheppard A. Jones, Aug 14 1904 Manhattan, certificaite number 17887 (bride- Sarah A. Crehan)

Each U.S. state keeps it's own vital records (births, deaths, marriages) and usually parents are named. If a death record isn't found then the above marriage will hopefully list the details.

Aghadowey,

Many thanks. Super quick response.

I have the details from familysearch but none of it confirms that the Sheppard in US is the same Sheppard from Wexford. The children names give strong support as they are all historic family names. The details for the naturalization petition is most welcome.

You mention the marriage cert. Are these available online are is it a paid service?

Also would you have any clues to following the children and getting closer to present day?

Thanks again

Glen

Sarah's naturalization papers say that she was born Ruchestown, Ireland on 15 Nov. 1874 & her husband Sheppard was born Ennis Covily, Ireland on 3 Apr. 1871.  Marriage date was as above.  Her maiden name looks like Sarah Agnes Orehan.  She came to the US on the Lucania on 12 May 1895.

Shellyesq,

When I first read your response, I was despondent. End to connection to this Sheppard.

Then I recognized that Sarah Agnes last name is actually Crehan. No big deal you say. But what if Sheppard's born read Enniscorthy. That is where it would have been registered if it's my man. Am I grasping at straws or is this a possible/ probable that your Ennis Covily should read Enniscorthy??

Regards

Glen

It's typewritten, so I'm pretty sure I'm reading it correctly, but it's entirely possible that it was spelled incorrectly.  The information was probably coming from Sarah, and she may have been unfamiliar with the town.

Posts on the internet state that Robert Disney Jones died in 1895.  Sheppard's immigration was in 1896.  Sheppard could have left Ireland after his father's passing?  It also looks like your Sheppard's brothers left Ireland, so it is quite possible that the man you've found could be your Sheppard.

Regarding Ennis Covily / Enniscorthy: During the past couple of years, I've come across several (American) records that have errors with Irish place names.  Perhaps the person taking the information wasn't as thorough or careful as he/she could have been?

Have you tried to find obituaries for Sheppard's children?  More clues might be provided in an obituary.
