You're welcome. :)

I wondered about two possibilities for Susannah. Long-term estrangement, or long-term illness. Both would explain placing the children with other family members, Philip being in the classic situation at the time of single father not able to care for young children. (A widower would have remarried.) The one daughter being with maternal grandparents might suggest there wasn't a break with the Rodway family despite the dissolution of the partnerships.

edit - Following up on that last hunch, in 1861 there is an "S M", female, born c1803 in Birmingham, Patient, "Pauper Lunatic Asylum for the Borough of Birmingham". A bit of a stretch, but maybe a possibility.

Hi Janey

Once again thank you so much for your info, this could well be true and really worth a thought.

Susannah  was born in 1835 and the family were wealthy so I don't think SM 1803 applies although I don't think anything is impossible so I will certainly do a bit of research on her.

I thought the same re the family's socioeconomic status -- I wonder what other options there would have been for someone with a serious mental illness? (Not to mention that "promiscuous" women sometimes ended up in asylums, not that I'm mentioning it for any particular reason!)

Them being out of the country could explain the absences in 51 and 61, but with him in Edgaston in 41, one has to wonder where Susanna was. It's always possible they were based in Europe and he was home on a business trip and stayed with family (looks like James Rodway was Susanna's nephew, I think), or spent extended periods in England while she lived abroad ... but without the daughters? A puzzler!

Oh, just to note a typo in your post:

Susannah  was born in 1835 1805

-- now actually, she was baptised in 1805, and gave an age that = 1804 or 1805, in 1871.

Hi Janey

Philip has a sister Susannah and I have her born in 1815 but I have no other info on her.   I wonder if she is the same Susannah b. 1803 that you mention.   What puts me off of the description is "pauper" which this family certain wearn't.   Philip's daughter Susannah was born in 1835.   This is a great puzzler for sure and thank you for your help and observations on this.  I have the bit between my teeth and must delve into Susannah Snr

Hullo,
Interested to see your conversation as I am also descended from this family.
My gt grandmother was Elizabeth Agnes Rodway bn 1848 and she was living with her parents at Bristol Rd in 1851.
Her grandmother was Susannah Rodway nee Barron and Susannah Mills would have been named after her.
Will have to check my research but I know that one of the Rodway girls married a Belgian man.

Hullo, interested to see this thread as I am also descended from the Rodway family and all the names are familiar.
I think I recall that Susannah Mills was looking after her grandmother Susannah Rodway nee Barron in 1841.
Also that one of the Rodway girls married a Belgian, in Belgium.
My gt grandmother was Elizabeth Agnes Rodway/Shear, another grand-daughter of Susannah B and daughter of James Barron Rodway and Marianne Pensam.
