Hello Eilleen ... trust that your sudden crisis has been resolved and all has turned out OK.

The unveiling of 'George Bint of the Mint' was an interesting journey and I feel that there is a lot more information (TROVE site has many articles) you will find out about this very talented man.

What has me intrigued is how Letitia, the daughter of George Mint and (supposedly) wife Margaret, found out that her father had passed away in England?  and that when George died, he had so little money after having such a well paid job with The Melbourne Mint.

Thanks for some background on the Bint family and also the link to photo of Maria ...  one frightening looking Victorian Type Lady to me!.   Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,   yes thank you, crisis over, :)

I have just been reading through the findings that you detectives routed out, I have a query  ::)

I think I read this correct ,
Margaret Carmody, went over to Australia 1858.
married Thomas Steven Ryan in                1866.
had 7 children by him between the years 1867 and 1879,
but Letitia Bint was born in 1872 .  am I getting something muddled  ???

one piece that fits, George Bint's mother was called Letricia or something similar.

Eilleen, having a day off work and thinking she will be on the computer most of the day  ;D
                Housework  ??? what housework  :-*
EXTON, from Rutland, Stamford, Boston, Lincoln. LANES, from Coleby,to Bracebridge Lincoln.WAKEFIELD,PROUDMAN Cheshire and  Stafford.<br />PINDAR, MOORE, ,CHAMBERS mostly from Lincolnshire.
LAING from Elgin ,Scotland.
 HADDELSEY from Caistor,and Grimsby Lincolnshire.
Parfitt, Le Gros ,Le Sueur, from Jersey.
Martin, from Doncaster  to whelyn garden city, London.
BINT, Worchester, in Australian mint.

Hello Eilleen ... sorry but I lost track of all that story when the Margaret Carmody bit came into the picture   ???

What I found was Letitia's birth record in Melbourne which showed parents as George Bint (love it that it was Bint of the Mint  ;D ) and a Margaret Ryan so where the heck Carmody came into it all, I don't know  ???   Of course the other thing is that it looks like George & Margaret didn't actually get around to 'tying the knot' (well, no record found of it anyway) but if they did, Georgie was a naughty boy as he was already married to Maria !!

... and then George leaving his, few pennies, to MARGARET BINT ....  and who wrote to Letitia in Melbourne (Australia) to tell her that her father died in England ???

If your interested, you can buy Letitia's birth certificate and Margaret's death certificate at

online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action

This is one very interesting story and would like to know how you get on... please do keep me in the loop.  Good luck ... and it is now off to bed for me.  Bonnie from Sydney.
PS .... More fun doing family research than 'mowing the carpet and bathing the kitchen floor'!   ;D

Hi
We cannot be certian that the found  immigration record for a MARGARET CARMODY is the correct woman.  It is not an uncommon Irish name after all.

The difficulty in the sequence of events is the birth of LETITIA in 1872 which is placed after 3 births to MARGARET CARMODY and THOMAS STEPHEN RYAN.

Following it there are a further 5 births to MARGARET and THOMAS RYAN.

I am not able to locate any further information about THOMAS STEPHEN RYAN after his registration as the father of the children.

It is noteworthy that LETITIA was born in Melbourne while all others were born around Ballarat which is also where MARGARET was buried. Seemingly she returned to family connections after GEORGE BINT returned to England and died there.

Some other items of interest.

ERNEST HAYWOOD and LETITIA were in Castlemaine the first time they appear on the
Electoral Roll

1903- Address Barker Street, Castlemaine
HAYWARD
Ernest Charles Newton- Hotelkeeper
Letitia HD
Mary Winifred Hd

1909- Address 44 Ardoch Streeet Essendon
HAYWARD
Ernest Charles W (sic) Traveller
Letitia HD

This as you see, was next door to GEORGE BINT's address in 1898.
Perhaps we can think that MARGARET was also at that address.

One of the children of Michael Ryan and Margaret Carmody joined the ww1 forces 1915.

MICHAEL JOSEPH RYAN. Born June 1879. His sister was his NOK and she was Margaret (Maggie)- married to Sheehan- of Gertrude Street Preston.

MICHAEL suffered from  “Delusuional Insanity” and was mentally very unwell. You can read his digitised records at-

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/

He died in 67 aged 86. He seems to have been institutionalised

I will type up the birth details of the RYAN children tomorrow if you would like them.

BONNIE

Bonnie the findings on the thread show this connection quite clearly.

MARGARET used her married name of RYAN in the registering of LETITIA's birth.

MARGARET's birth name was CARMODY as shown on her marriage to THOMAS STEPHEN and on the death registration for LETITIA which are all listed above.

Eilleen,
This has come to my attention through further research and alters the whole picture.

The deceased children listed above are buried at Ballarat New Cemetery
They are together
Location- RCB 6.53

With them is

RYAN , MARGARET died 1/5/1881 aged 38-wife
CARMODY, Daniel died 28/11/1880 aged 28- miner

Deaths-

RYAN Margaret
Father: Michel Carmody
Mother: Ellen HAYES
Age 38
Death Place: BALLARAT
Year 1881
Reg 3444

CARMODY Danl
Father: Unknown
Mother:
Age 28
Birth Place TIPPERARY
Year 1880
Reg 9038

So  ???

It seems there has been an extraordinary co-incidence of names, dates and places and I have been merrily misled . ::)

Once again it demonstrates there is no certainty without the sighting of actual certificates.

We are left with the simpler picture of GEORGE BINT finding a new partner in Australia - MARGARET-  and having LETITIA in 1872. He returned to UK  in later life and died there leaving what he had to her.

Much less complicated anyway, but .....!!?
