act of abolition of fines
« on: Monday 11 February 13 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, wonder if someone could help me,I've a two page document belonging to my great great grandmother dated 12th January 1864 in front of two commissioners for the count of Durham, she is Ann the wife of John Brough Ayre of Durham saying she intended to pass her estate in the premises respecting which acknowledgement was made,, it's something to do with deeds and has affidavit and other terms on it,truly fascinating I've looked up it on the internet and think it's to do with sale of her property but I might be wrong, please help x x Jo

Hi Jo,

It sounds like you are able to read some of the handwriting, but if there are parts you can't read just go ahead and attach them to a post on this thread. If you need help understanding the document, then you can post part of it here too. We would love to help but we need something to work with!

It could be to do with the Fines and Recoveries Act 1833. An Act for the abolition of fines and recoveries, and for the substitution of more simple modes of assurance.  http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Will4/3-4/74

Hi Jo,

The regnal year you quoted, 4 Wm IV, ran from 26.6.1833 to 25.6.1834,
so the Act which Stan has linked for you appears to be the relevant
one, but sadly, I can't understand a word of it. :(

vv.

P.S. Could your reading of 'elementary' perhaps be 'eleventh'?

Jo,

Don't give up yet. :)

If you can post some of the second page, or an image of part of it, hopefully
someone will come along who can help you.
