Can anyone please help me trace the family of Capt James Stewart who died  at Karla Bombay Presidency.
He raised the crack regiments Indian Rajputana Rifles,  The  Guards  and  Brigade of Grenadiers in ?? 1775 -1777 of the British Indian Army
He was ? ADC to the Gov. William Hornby .
He led the advance unit of the HEICo army up the Bhor Ghats and fought the Maharratas
Was respected and loved by both the Indian soldiers in his command and by the Maharratas  who named him "Ishtur Phakde" meaning " The Gallant Stewart"
I have been told he may have a connection with the Stewarts of Lanakrshire.

jato,  I believe those Stewarts were double barrelled to Harington Stuart in the 19th cent', if that helps any, they were off the Stuarts of Castlemilk. Torrance House/Castle on Google.

Skoosh:Many many thanks. After 5 years of research there seems to be some light. I need some little more help. Would you be able to give me an email address of some one who is knowledgeable about this area and possibly the family. I could then contact them directly!! I am thrilled. The pics of the area are really wonderful
