Baptisms at St Cuthbert, York

The IGI shows that John and Abigail Gilbank had 7 children baptised at Saint Cuthbert, York between 1803 and 1820. The first was William on 28 Mar 1803. The last was Hannah on 1 Feb 1820.

Does anyone have access to a copy of the Registers? I would love to know whether there is any reference to John's occupation.

Managed to look up the register for you and the earlier baptisms were in the Dade register so lots of lovely information:

1. William GILBANK (Born: 25 March 1803, baptised: 28 March 1803) son of:

Father's details - John GILBANK a farmer son of John GILBANK of Newton on the Forest a farmer by Mary HOLMES is wife.

Mother's details: Abigail daughter of William DAVIDSON of Skeldergate by Esther HARMAN his wife.

2. Esther GILBANK (Born: 29 Jan 1808, baptised: 9 Feb 1808) - looked like 5th born (but see below) 3rd daughter of:

same parent details except John is now recorded as labourer.

3. Ann GILBANK (Born: 22 Aug 1810, baptised: 26 Aug 1810) - looked like 7th(?) born of:

John now of Peasholmegreen and his father of Sutton on Forest - William DAVIDSON now deceased of York, sawyer

4. Elizabeth born 12 Feb 1813, bap 14 Feb 1813 - John of Peasholmegreen, lab

George bap 5 Nov 1815, Joseph bap 2 Dec 1816 and Hannah bap 1 Feb 1820 - these are the "new" style records and did not provide any additional information.

I can't thank you enough for all that information - this has pushed my tree back by another generation.

I think Esther was the 3rd daughter and Ann was the 4th but it is always possible I have missed some earlier baptisms

I've just been looking on the GENUKI alphabetical list and index for places in Yorkshire.

Lots of Newtons but no Newton on the Forest. Could this be a specific farm in the Parish of Sutton on Forest?  I found a marriage for John Gilbank and Mary Holmes at Sutton in the Forest in 1766 so their links seem to be with that parish.

I wasn't sure about the Newton on Forest bit when I read it although that is what it said.  I have never heard of it, there is Stockton on Forest and Sutton on Forest but not a Newton as far as I know.

I could check the GILBANK entries in the Sutton on Forest registers for you sometime which may shed some light on where the Newton reference came from or maybe the St Cuthbert's minister just misheard Sutton as Newton.

If you get the chance to check the Sutton on Forest registers for Gilbank entries it would be a great help.  Also I suppose the marriage entry of John Gilbank and Abigail Davidson at St Sampson, York on 29/11/1795 might give a bit more information. I've been researching this family for years so there's no urgency!

One of John's sons put his father's ocupation down as soldier on his marriage certificate and I'd be interested to know whether he ever was in the army. He seems to have been quite a tough character. In 1820 he was arrested for poaching and shipped out to Australia. He survived a seven year sentence in Tasmania and eventually returned to York.
