Ann ??? Brick wall!!!
« on: Saturday 04 June 05 20:21 BST (UK) »
Ann ??? married James Jewell, can't find marraige
on 1861 census
RG9/3848 118 13
James Jewell   Head   27   Married   Coalminer   Hexham Northumberland
Ann Jewell   Wife   25   Married   ----------   Durham, Shiney Row
Joseph Jewell   Son   2 weeks   Single   ----------   Seghill, Northumberland

on her son Joseph's baptism in  she was recorded as Ann Jewell

between 1864 and 1869, James Jewell died and she remarried William Reay

now I'm rightly stuck to what her maiden name was.

Surely if you can get the certificate for the second marriage it will have her father's name on it?

There may also be a parish register transcript with the father's name on it, although in many cases where the bride was a widow, the father's name was omitted. In civil registration, the information is mandatory I believe (unless she was illegitimate perhaps). Good luck

Hi Sharon,

One method for finding maiden name's that's worked for me in the past is to go back one census and look for single women with the same christian name, born in the same place and of about the right age.

A search of the 1851 census for Anns born in Shiney Row in 1836 +/- 2 years shows just 4 possible candidates:

Mary Ann COOKE
Ann CRELLIN
Ann RICHARDSON &
Ann SIMPSON

In other cases like this I've already had the marriage reference for the groom and then it's just a question of going through the marriage indexes for the possible surnames for the bride and hopefully finding a match.  In your case it's a bit more difficult as you don't yet have a reference for James JEWELL's marriage and FreeBMD coverage is still fairly low for some of the years in which they are likely to have married (1860 in particular) and only shows up a few James JEWELL marriages from the South West of England - unlikely to be yours.  Nevertheless, you can still use the same idea but it's a bit more time consuming.  I'd start by going through the marriage indexes for 1859 & 1860 and looking for James JEWELL marriages in the North East of England and then trying to match up with the Anns with the surnames above in the same quarter.

It's not a dead cert method for a number of reasons (your Ann could be missing from the 1851 census, Ann's birthplace could be recorded differently in the two cenuses, they may not have married in the North East etc.) but it's worth a try!

Regards,

Al

I was going to suggest Joseph's birth cert as well-it should have had the mother's maiden name.. Ann Jewell (Formerly xxxxxx).

There are no marriages registered in area for james Jewell in right time frame (went back to 1854) so assume the marriage is either registered only under Ann's name (try the names above) or they got married elsewhere.

Good Luck!
