Just a thought Sharon, could they have married in Scotland?  I think they were only living a couple of miles from Hadrian's Wall in the 1861 censu.  Have you checked on SP?

This is a real long shot but I'm looking for an Annie Jewell from the Channel Islands ......  ::)
wonder if they are related !! I have found her son Charles on the CWGC - he had been married and lived in London

Have found out that her maiden name was Mason but this gets me no nearer to her parents.  :'(

Did you notice on the 1861 census, that the next door family are Masons of about the right age to be her parents???

There is a baptism of an Ann Mason in Penshaw (parish for Shiney Row) 24 Aug 1834 d/o John and Mary.

Just checked the 1861 census the family next door are
Joseph Mason 57
Margaret 49
John 16
Margaret 18.

All born Shiney Row

And as Ann's first son was called Joesph it is very possible that he was named after her father.
