Sorry I have no idea if this covers the area that you research in - Aghada Parish?
This is Midleton Parish - Aghada is different area.  Think I gave you marriage details previously for Henry Cooke :)

Hi - and thanks for your kind offer.  I'm searching for Michael Colbert and wife, Katherine Kelleher.  They had three sons (at least) and apparently one daughter.  The sons all emigrated to Boston Massachusetts.  The U.S. Colbert Clan is gathering this July on Cape Cod and I'd love to present the location where the 3 immigrant boys were born and raised.  Their names: James (born March 1851, emigrated 1876), Michael (born 24 May 1855, emigrated 1884) and Thomas (born 12 Oct 1860, emigrated 1885). Thanks! Jo

Hi Jo & welcome to rootschat.  Just to establish what is your source that the family came from Midleton co cork?  On checking the Griffith Valuation on www.nationalarchives.ie there are only 2 michael colberts listed - 1 in Mogeely 1 in Lisgoold Co Cork. This was a land survey in the mid 1850's in Ireland.   The Midleton Baptism records would not cover the above outlying parishes.
So if you can revert to me  also do you have ship passenger records for the Colberts?
Regards Frances :)

Frances,
Thanks so much for the prompt reply! I don't have the ships or the ports of entry/departure - except that the family lore has it that the Colberts were from Queenstown, Cork. But I see no Colberts there.  It may well have meant the it was their port of departure, of course, but that also doesn't say whether they went via Liverpool or not. The passenger arrival records are pretty spotty and often are index-only with scant information about departure ports or home townland - and am a bit of a loss on how to get vague arrival-by-port index cards (with Thomas Colbert, say - and departure port "Ireland") to passenger manifest - which might have more detail. I too say the Michael in Mogeely and another in Ballynoe - but here again, it's not clear to me what one should do with those leads. Can you suggest a best next-step from the Griffiths information?  Thanks again, Jo

Jo, the Griffiths will not give any further detail except to place a person in a location/townland etc. This is helpful if you know exactly near enough where your ancestors originated.
I had a look at the passenger records but as you say they provide little detailed info except mostly Ireland as a persons place of origin.
You mentioned Queenstown (now known as Cobh Co Cork) but this may or may not be their port of departure as a lot of emigrants left ireland from here.
I will take a look tomorrow at Midleton records to "rule in or out".
The Roman Catholic church records are due to come on line on 8th July from Irish Parishes from The National Library of Ireland.
It may be worthwhile you posting on the rootschat US Look Ups board for the passenger records for the three brothers, give their parents names, & Co Cork as birth location and Boston as arrival location. There are fantastic researchers on here & if records are available they will find them. Will revert to you if I source any information. Regards Frances

Yes, I saw that on familysearch.org - though it's not clear whether its a certificate (i.e., more info) or a registration record (i.e., less).  Thanks very much - I'll follow up on this.
All the best, Frances - much appreciated,
Jo
