Hello,

I have found a record online for a James Joseph Roche baptised in Midleton on 23 Oct 1870, his parents were William Roche and Mary Daly. I have also found their marriage cert online for Midleton 31 Oct 1869. Could you please check if there are any other children baptised in Midleton to this couple? James Joseph Roche I know is a relative and he became Bishop of Cloyne died 31 August, 1956.

Thank you for your kind offer. Would you please be able to see if there is a marriage for James Lynch to Mary King who married in about 1853. On the 1871 English Census it says they were both born in Midleton, Ireland and I am hoping they married there. They had three children Ellen, John and Patrick born in Cork before moving to Kent, England in 1863.

I have not been able to find any early records for this family so any information would be very much appreciated.

Hello Pauline had a look today at Church records but no result for names mentioned above. While James did record Middleton as place of birth on 1871 Census this could mean a number of outlying parishes. Have had a look at tithe applotment books & Griffiths Valuation both available online at www.nationalarchives.ie more specifically for surname of KING which is more uncommon than Lynch but no positive outcome.
www.rootsireland.ie does have a church baptism in Roman Catholic Parish of Cloyne (not far from Midleton) for a James Lynch in 1828 and a Marriage in same parish in 1856. This is a Pay site & you have to register - take a look but there is no guarantee this would be your James Lynch.
Familysearch.org does have various collections also for Ireland.
3 of James & Marys children are recorded as born in Cork - the others in Kent UK;
Civil Registration wasnt introduced in Ireland until 1864 so information prior to this is not readily available unless one has a Parish name etc.
www.irishgenealogy.ie covers the Diocese of Cork & Ross & includes South Parish & St Peter & Paul Churches where sometimes people from other areas of county cork were baptised/married.
Regards Frances :)

Hi Frances

Thank you for your time and trouble in looking up the Lynch family.
I was hopeful that there may have been some record of them in the Midleton Church records. The ages of the Lynch family vary so much on all the English census that it is difficult to know exactly when they were born especially James. The 1828 birth could be James but not sure about the 1856 marriage as their daughter Ellen we think was born in 1855.

Thanking you once again.

Pauline

Pauline you cannot rely on ages given on Censuses - people often didnt know their correct date of birth . regards frances

Hello Frances,

I was wondering if you could please check the Midleton baptism records to see if there was any Patrick Roche baptised between 1865 - 1871 with parents John Roche & Catherine Parker?

Also do you know did marriage certs back then often have incorrect ages for the bride and groom?

Regards,
Alan

It will be next week before I can get to the records & I will check on your enquiry.
You had a query some time ago ref cemetery for the Workhouse in Midleton.
There is a graveyard called St Josephs in broomfield west midleton & I do know people were buried there from the workhouse but the graves are unmarked & hav no headstones.
