I wasn't a toddler, not even a tiddler. I know my grandfather died the same year meaning I never got the chance to meet him.

February 7th, 1851 James Shaw married Margaret Smith in Nairn ( Oh, what a terrible time I have had with trying to trace her family but let's not go there at the moment). They were my 2 x great grandparents. He was a sea captain, she the daughter of a mason and although not rich, I suspect they were extremely comfortable. I have portraits of them, done in later life.

Ten years later, 1861, in Tollesbury Essex, my 4 x great grandfather, Samuel Howe died. What he couldn't know was that he would have a grandson, born in 1865, who would go on to marry the daughter of the above named James Shaw and Margaret Smith.

That's neat, isn't it! :)

Albert Douglas married Sarah Pierce Boyce at Windsor Registry Office in 1859.
He was 37 and she was 50. Both her parents had died and Albert worked in the Boyce family bakery in Middle Hill, on Egham Hill

Albert's oldest brother James Douglas and Sarah's younger sister Martha Ann Boyce had married 26 years previously.

Although Sarah was too old to have children, in 1867 James's daughter Elizabeth Boyce Donaldson died, followed by her husband John Donaldson in 1868. There were 6 children orphaned and two of these, Sarah Boyce Donaldson (10) and Mary Donaldson (5), sometimes known as Mary Boyce Donaldson, came to live with Albert and Sarah. James Douglas, though now old, took the youngest child, JOhn, and one further child lived with the Donaldson family in nearby Thorpe. THe other two were with family further afield.
Albert ran the bakery until after Sarah's death in 1883, when he moved to live with his spinster sister Mary. He died in 1888.

James Douglas was born in 1806 at Chertsey, Surrey to James Douglass and Mary nee Varnden.
He married Martha Ann Boyce in 1833 at St Marylebone's Church, London.
After of about the same time as his father died in 1835 he started a watchmaking business in Egham High Street. I feel this was probably in two different locations.
He was also registrar of births deaths and marriages for Egham, and for a while was clerk of the course for Egham races which took place on Runnymede.

James was my great great grandfather.
He died in 1879 in Egham.

The picture of James and Martha was taken in 1872 in Manchester
