Emma Ellen Newman (nee Todd)
« on: Wednesday 30 January 13 22:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My wife's Gt-Gt- Aunt, Emma Ellen Todd (born Dudley, Northumberland, England 1884) is last noted in the 1911 Dudley census.

The only marriage of an Emma E Todd in Northumberland occurred in 1919 to a George Newman (Emma would have been 35yrs old).

There is an outward passenger list of an Emma Ellen Newman (married) - address 51 Market Street, Dudley, Northumberland on 1st December 1919 to Wellington, New Zealand.

Everything ties in, except she states she is 30 (she should be 35).

If this is my Emma, can anybody trace her steps in New Zealand?

When did she die?

what children did she have?

I am wondering (as it looks like she travelled alone) if George Newman was a New Zealand soldier in WWI, and was stationed over here? And they married, and she followed him back to New Zealand.

Thanks,

Darin.

There is a strong likelihood that this is your George given your proposed back story http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ss5/

Archives New Zealand hold the records for WW1 service, for which you may like to request a 'Look-up'

I don't see a WW1 file at Archives for a George Newman Serial No. 69750 maybe he served in WW2 as well, the file would be with the NZDF if that was the case

Cheers Janette

Hi Darin

re:  Deaths in New Zealand :

- nothing for an Emma Ellen NEWMAN

- no re-marriage (up to 1956) of an Emma NEWMAN (TODD)

----------

All that comes close is the death of an Emma NEWMAN aged 80 years in 1968 - [bc 1888] :

[A probate file for this particular Emma NEWMAN (1968) was actioned through the Blenheim High Court.    I believe she was probably the w/o a John NEWMAN a farmer at Wairau (m. 1912 to Emma DAKEN) ].

Hello,

Emma Ellen and George Henry appear to have been buried next to each other.
Nothing that he was 23 when he died in 1944 would make his year of birth abt 1921, so its
possible Emma died in childbirth.

Regards,
Hinton
