Hammond Johnson did he move to Canada
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 19:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've posted about Hammond before with little luck,  but a while back I came in contact with a cousin who suggested that he went to Canada and did all right for himself.

What I know about him is
born in Goudhurst, Kent in 1880
Parents James Johnson and and Frances Radcliffe Norrington
Occupation - saddler  (very much the family profession)
1901 he is in South Africa for the Boar War.
He married Ellen Caroline Campion in 12 Dec 1908
There only child Leslie Norrington Wyatt Johnson was born 24 Sep 1909 (My Grandfather)
All 3 of them are living in Gillingham Kent in the 1911 Census[

My Grandad didn't remember his dad, so I'm guessing he must have left before the first world war.  No indication that he joined up but it's possible.  (I think my Grandad would have know if he had, as he new his paternal grandad)

Hammond Johnson is not as uncommon a name as you would suppose.  There is the one found previously that served in the Canadian Forces and lived on Prince Edward Island.  He is on the Canadian Voters Lists.  Another one in New Brunwick and yet another listed as salesman and with an unnamed wife in Montreal, Quebec.  Link to city directories for Montreal

The one in Montreal was retired in 1962 which might indicate a birth closer to the 1900s if he retired at 65.

Thanks for this,

There has been a reply on the Kent board pointing out that his army record in the Boar War uses the name John  :'(

Are there any searchable records that would mention his parents

Hello Paul

After extensive searching my conclusion is that Hammond Johnson did not come to Canada.

His son was born, married and died in England. I have been unable to find a passenger record

on A******y for any of this family. There is a record for a Capt Hammond Johnson returning to Canada but obviously this is not your man.

Sorry, Hammond abandoned his wife and son,  Leslie my grandfather had no memory of his dad.

It's of very little help, but I thought I'd just add corroboration for the medal information you have in the other thread. You have this:

South African War Campaign Medal from 1901
          J.Johnson 4549 Saddler
          53 Company Imperial Yeomanry
          Wittibergen, Cape Colony, Transvaal

From Kevin Asplin's nominal role of the Imperial Army in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War:
