Fellowship Porter....what is it?
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what a Fellowship Porter is please. Several children of Joseph Priestley Heaps were baptised at churches in/near Billingsgate. Was a Fellowship some sort of union as opposed to casual labour, would there be any records anywhere?

Many thanks

There's an article here:

http://zythophile.wordpress.com/2007/11/02/the-forgotten-story-of-londons-porters/

And from that:

Fellowship Porters, who carried “measurable” goods (grain, coal, salt and the like) on and off ships moored in the Thames and in and out of warehouses,
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
