Sidney Charles Hewlett (b 1905), where'd he go?
« on: Monday 28 January 13 09:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Another riddle I hope you can help me with!

Sidney Charles Hewlett, my husbands Grandfather, married Vera Olive Wellings in 1925. They had 3 sons in quick succession, Leonard b 1925, Anthony b 1928 and Christopher b 1929. And this is where Sidney seems to disappear.

For the years between about 1930 to 1944 he's off the radar and I can't find any paper trail for him. He reappears in 1944 when his wife bears a daughter, Gloria, and then both the baby and the youngest son die..

Obviously there's a dirty washing potential here, possibly more so as in early 1945 Sidney leaves Gloucester with a young woman called Dorothy May Collier (who herself may have been leaving a marriage, but that's another riddle for another day!  ;) ) but does anyone out there have any info or ideas on where he's disappeared to?

Where are you hoping to find him?

With no censuses for those years, unless an event like a birth, marriage or death occurs, short of ploughing through electoral rolls, there aren't really accessible records?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I've been trying directories for the area in that time - he said he was a retired welder when he finally married Dorothy - but I was hoping that someone here might recognize the name  :)

How do you know he wasn't at home with his family during those years?

There's some, ahem, evidence to suggest that he wasn't.
Just in case any relatives do read this, I shan't say too much - the whole break up of that marriage seems to be a wound that's still sore, one of the main reasons my husband wants me to find out what actually happened so his own dad can stop feeling guilty about what Sidney may or may not have done.

If he was still in Gloucester with his family, surely he'd turn up in a directory or electoral roll though? We've thought perhaps he signed up come 1939, but I can't find any records or mention of him with that either.

Any ideas of where to look are greatly appreciated :)
