I agree, it's either boot or boat - where was the chap whose occupation this is, look at the other occupations on the page and it should help confirm which of the two it is

First reaction was Boatman. I have several as ancestors. But, I hope he lived near the sea or a large river.

This was in response to a lookup Ken did for me. The chap concerned appears on BMD certificates and other censuses as cordwainer or boot and shoe maker, so I presume in this instance (1841), it stood for bootmaker.
