Christopher Pearcey 8th Foot 1st Battalion Kings Regiment
« on: Thursday 24 January 13 09:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi All  :)

I was wondering if anyone may have any further information on Christopher Pearcey who served in the Kings Regiment during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and was discharged in 1860 I am having trouble finding his parents or any events preceding this. So a next of kin would be handy or any information regarding his time in the army would also be appreciated.

Thanks  ;)

There is a Christopher Pearcy b. 1822 Camberwell, Surrey  Private 1/8th Reg, unmarried on the 1861 at Gosport Barracks -

RG 9 Piece 647 Folio 60 Page 31

But as you said he was discharged in 1860 then perhaps he is not the correct one ???

On the 1871 & 1881 both state his occupation as pensioner which could indicate army pensioner.

There is a marriage of a Christopher Pearcey -

q3 1862, Lambeth Vol 1d Page 395

On the same page is an Emma Cannon.

The name Emma ties in with the 1871 & 1881 census.

If you feel that this is the same person to the one you are researching then the marriage certificate should have the name of Christopher's father which will enable you to go further back.

On the 1871/1881 census for Christopher Pearcey there is a daughter Mary Jane b. 1864, Sheffield.

This is the baptism from Sheffield Indexers -

Pearey, Mary Jane (of Barracks, born 3.9.1863).
Baptised September 27, 1863, by Milward Cooke at Military Chapel, Hillsborough.
Parents Emma & Christopher (Private 8th Kings Regt.).

Hi JJen

Yes, I have him in the barracks in Gosport in 1861 (sorry I miss typed earlier) and marrying Emma Cannon in 1862 through the FreeMBD index which has no details other than the date. Not knowing anything else about Christopher I can't get back any further than his Army information posted.

I do have the other information you kindly supplied though. I was tracing back from an Alice Pearcey who marriend my Great Grandfather George Arthur Pollard, and whose mother was Emma Cannon, as stated on her marriage certifcate. How ever as you saw yourself Christopher and Emma had one child Mary Jane. The interesting thing is all the facts match perfectly...dates, places, extra. I can trace Mary Jane up until just before Alice married George but can find no Alice Pearcey before this and no Mary Jane after. I am guessing they are the same person but can find nothing (maybe Alice as middle name) to confirm my suspicions.

I was hoping to find some information that might help to clear this little mystery up.

Thanks very much for taking the time to help.

Ooooh OK, thanks. That was me presuming again. I am just starting to understand how the army worked back then. So he would have been in the Army Reserves between 1861 - 7 then?
