Sarah Porter Basted
« on: Thursday 24 January 13 00:44 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone shed any light on this lady, who's listed as having married at Whitechapel in 1813? It's the only mention I've found of her, and I'm puzzled by the triple name; is the "Basted" part of a double surname (I've looked under several alternative spellings), or might it be a mis-spelling of "bastard" (and why would that form part of a marriage entry)?
Oddly, I found another marriage at St Mary Whitechapel in April of the same year, and the bride is named as Sarah Porter Adams. I'm VERY confused!

Hi

Looking at the marriage entry I would say that Basted is her surname and Porter a middle christian name.  It was not unusual for what we would consider to be surnames to be used as christian names at this time.  Very often it would be the mothers surname or the maiden name of a grandma.

Basted as a surname is not uncommon.  :)

Thanks, Rosie. That was my hunch, too -- until I discovered the other Porter. I'll have to keep searching for that marriage!
