DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY WW1 LOOK-UP PLEASE
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I wonder if anyone could help me please....I'm trying to find any Military records on my Grandfather who served with The Durham Light Infantry in WW1..He was in Ypres "possibly 1917", though I'm not 100% sure of the date.

His Name was George Armstrong born Sunderland 1896  and in 1911 he was living at 24 Rutland Street, Sunderland Co.Durham (but he may not have been there when he was in the army) I know he moved to Willington Quay at some time but I'm unsure if this was before or after the war... His Father was named George William Armstrong (his Mother was Anne Armstrong although she may not have been alive then)

Any look-ups or help with this would be very much appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance  :)

According to TNA Medal Cards, There are 245 cards for George Armstrong, ::) but only 16 are in the DLI, ;D 13 if he had no middle name,
When looking for my great uncle, I noted all the service numbers down relating to his regiment, Then joined Ancestry on a 14 day trial, Here's the link, Click on each header to expand, then back to return to the list,
Good Luck

Thank you so much for your help and the link, I've found out that George Armstrong is quite a common name in the DLT and narrowing him down is quite difficult so your advice is appreciated, heading over to check out the link now.

Many thanks once again  :)

Back again to say wow what a great link, I've used the archives before and never knew this existed, I've noted down the service numbers and will be checking them out...he didn't have a middle name so 13 instead of 16   ;D

Many many thanks once again  :)

Assuming that George Armstrong survived the war he should be on the Absent Voters Rolls of 1918. Try looking up 24 Rutland Street on the Civillian and Absent Voters Rolls for that area. The Civilian Roll will give the residents of 24 Rutland Street and the Absent Voters Roll should give his name, regiment and number.

Thank you for the information on the Absent Voters Rolls, I went to check it out at the Durham  County Records office and found that unfortunately.......The Absent Voters' Lists probably no longer survive for:
South Shields
Stockton on Tees
Sunderland"

I still tried to find something but got nothing for Sunderland at all.

Thank you so much for trying to help me, would have been great if it was there. :)

Just thought about this, ;D try your local library, most council's subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition,
With ours, You have to be a library member ::), book a PC, £1 for half an hour, print off's extra,
It's a lot cheaper than a subscription,

Wow again, that's great advice, I just checked out my local Library and in their Family History Section, as well as the usual Microfiche and Micofilm they also give free access to Ancestry.com ...wonderful to know that and the bonus is it's only five minutes from where I live, I'll be booking some sessions for sure. pity it's closed on Wednesdays ;D

Thank you "so" much for your help, it really is appreciated muchly   :D
