Hi, thanks for that, it confirms what we suspected! Now I just have to solve the mystery of who his first wife was and where he was in 1851 and 1861!

When he reappears in 1871 he is with Mary, however in 1881 she lists herself as Mary Ash which was her maiden name

Mary is listed in the 1881 Census as Mary WILD, not ASH

1881: 75 Mansfield Road,  Kentish Town, St Pancras
RG11/Piece: 219/ Folio: 45/ Page: 4
Head: Mary WILD 37, widow, Lodging House Keeper, b Totnes Devon
Dau: Mary Alice WILD 14, Scholar, b St Pancras
Dau: Ellen WILD 13, Scholar, b St Pancras
Son: James WILD 10, Scholar, b St Pancras
Dau: Edith WILD 7, Scholar, b St Pancras
Dau: Minnie E WILD 7, Scholar, b St Pancras
Plus 1 boarder and 3 lodgers.

It may not have been James that was married before and therefore not free to marry Mary ASH.
It could be Mary that was not free to marry James!

Cheers

Had never thought of her being married, funny isn't it I just presumed it would be James.  I know that in 1861 she was a servant in a house in Regents Park which means the family rumour about one of my ancestors marrying beneath him into a possibility.  By 1871 they have children, I think Angelina was born a year later.  The rumour was he had married beneath him and been disowned by his family but not sure how much truth there was in that given that his father had already passed away by this time.  Thanks for taking the time to help. Was he in the last remaining parents will. If it were his father who disowned him, perhaps his mother didn't, hence for a time he took her surname , just a thought

Hi, I haven't been able to find a will for Sarah or a probate record.  Her full name was Sarah Chappell Wild nee Wilson and she died in 1876 in St Pancras.  I would really love to know what happened to them and what their story was but I think it's looking unlikely at the moment.  Each year new records become available so one day I might just discover something more about them.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.  Regards, MyGenes

It did occur to me that he might have been a witness to a sibling  marriage between the years he is assumed to be missing

I would have assumed that if Sarah was in a wealthy marriage she might have left a will, I could't find one either as yet

Is there a possibility he may have gone abroad during his missing years, or had he been a naughty boy ????

Hi, haven't found a record of him going overseas but it is possible so will look at that angle.  Seems odd that he can vanish for such a large number of years.  Will see if I can find his siblings marriages online.  Thanks for taking the time to help.

In my humble experience it is not difficult to evade the census man, many have "gone missing" I have tried just putting in John, year of birth plus or minus 2 years either side and his place of birth, nothing comes up that is familiar with the names you have shown, perhaps you might try this angle and something might just pop out of the page that you recognise. I didn't look at Scotland census, that might be a possibility if he was a builder by trade

Happy hunting
