Electoral rolls Willington Quay
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 14:47 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone who is able to look in the electoral registers for the Willington Quay/Howden area of Newcastle for Thomas Snowdon from 1918, and Norman Snowdon from 1932 please.  I know that some records were destroyed.
Thank you

Hi Sudee

Electoral registers are compiled by address, not name, unless they were living in the equivalent of a 1 or 2 street village.

Do you have an address?

sudee,

Newcastle Central library has a large holding of ERs for Newcastle and a handful of others, such as Wansbeck and "Tyneside".

Willington Quay and Howden areas were not part of Newcastle.

I can tell you it is a pain looking for ERs for the area that is now termed "North Tyneside".
North Shields library has the largest holding, but several years and areas are missing. Other libraries, such as Wallsend have no "old" ERs.

Additionally Northumberland County Record Office at Woodhorn has a range of ERs for parts of Northumberland that are now North Tyneside.

Hi sudee  :)

As Michael pointed out in your earlier enquiry, you would need to know where they lived

If you can establish which constituency, you could try the British Library at St Pancras as you're in London according to your other post.

Their holdings are here

http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/offpubs/electreg/parliamentary/parliamentaryconstituencies.pdf

You'll need a readers tickets and 48hrs notice as the older registers are kept in storage off-site.

Thank you for the replies I got from various people regarding my post for Electoral registers Willington Quay.  I do have two possible addresses if anyone is willing or able to look them up for me.  They are 11 Nelson Street Willington Quay and 23 Benjamin Road Howden.  The names I am interested in are Thomas SNOWDON, Norman SNOWDON and George SNOWDON. Regarding another suggestion, I am not sure how to go about getting the details of Electoral Constituancies or how easy it is to get a reading ticket for the British Library

Hi

Registering for a readers ticket is straightforward, details here

http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/stp/register/stpregister.html

if you do register you have to tell them what you are looking for as they don't let people have tickets willy-nilly, just tell them you need to look at electoral registers in Social Sciences.

Re: the constituencies, contact the archives for Northumberland and ask them if they can help with Willington Quay and Howden and the dates you are interested in.

The constituencies they are in now are most probably completely different to the historic ones.
