Mackenzie family from Lochbroom, Ross-Shire, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 22 January 13 16:33 GMT (UK) »
The Mackenzie family are all living at number 7 Rereabhach, Lochbroom, Ross- Shire, Scotland in the 1901 census. The parents are John and Margaret Mackenzie.

I'm just wondering if three of the children left the UK to go to Canada or the USA, but I am unable to access the records without purchasing a worldwide subscription - and hope that maybe some kind person out there might be able to help me  8)  8)  8)

The children in question are:

Peter Mackenzie, born 1897, Lochbroom.
Simon Mackenzie, born 1898, Lochbroom.
Rodena Mackenzie, born 1901, Lochbroom.

All three names come up with the following: Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905 - 1957 record.

In addition, Simon's name comes up with the following: Canada Ocean Arrivals (Form 30A) 1919 - 1924 Record.
Researching the names Mckenzie / Mackenzie from Ross and Cromarty especially Scoraig and Rherivach.

The names Fraser, MacGillivary and Grant from Daviot & Dunlichity.

The name of Fraser from Lanarkshire.

The name of Bell from Northumberland.

The name Chilla / Chylla / Chyla from Poland.

The Simon Mackenzie on the Ocean Arrivals cards lists his destination as Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, but also lists his father Allan in Inverness as his contact so I don't think this is your Simon...

The Rodina Mackenzie on the Detroit cards IS your  Rodena. She lists her birth place as Lochbroom,
father as John at Ferry Inn, Ullapool(?) Scotland. Heading to her sister Mrs (Ivanville?) at 4810 Fernwood (no city, assume Detroit?) Rodena is 27 years 8 months old and a telephone operator who was living in London Ontario. She lists her date of landing at Nov 20 1926 at Quebec onboard the Montclair.

I cannot find a Peter or Simon to match yours in the Detroit cards....

Rodena did arrive on the Montclair on the date provided on the border crossing document.  The image can be found on ancestry.ca.  She is indexed as Rhedina Mac??
It shows that she was a nurse in Scotland and was going to the Salvation Army Lodge in Toronto and her intended occupation - domestic.  Under settlement schemes women came in as domestics and men as farmers.

Hi,

If you would like to see the image of the passenger list that cosmac found, it is available for free at the Library and Archives Canada site.  On the search page, she is listed as Rhodina Mackenzie.  Here is the link to the image.  She is number 10 on this page.

Hi again,

Just having a look through the Detroit border crossing records on familysearch... I have no idea if this Peter is yours or not, but in 1933, he says he is 34 years old and was born in Rosshire.  His mother is Margaret MacKenzie, living in Inverness.  This is the right birth place and approximate birth year and mother's name.  It says he was in the US before - from 1929-1933.
