Agnes Muir. Where was she?
« on: Monday 21 January 13 21:57 GMT (UK) »
Agnes was my gg grandmother and I'm trying to find her and her daughters on the 1911 census.  Now I've tried every means I can think of for a long time now and haven't found her.  I'm thinking that she was probably missed off the census but before I give up I thought I'd ask for the help of you kind people a perhaps fresh eyes might help.

She was born Agnes Laing c1851 in Scotland, the reason I'm so keen on finding her in 1911 is the hope that a more definitive birth place is given.  I do have a family in mind for Agnes by process of elimination but without a place of birth I'm reluctant to add them to my tree.

Anyway as I  said, she was born Agnes Laing, daughter of William Laing a  Blacksmith and married William Muir in Newcastle in 1872.  They had several children including 2 daughters Alice and Angelina who are also missing from the census.  I know they are all alive  as I have Agnes' death cert for 1923 and both girls marriages after 1911.

William died in 1895 and in 1901 Agnes seems  to be in the workhouse in Newcastle (the age is slightly out but I think its her).  She does die in the workhouse in 1923 but her address is given as her sons house in Newcastle so I'm thinking perhaps she was a patient rather than an inmate.  Anyway I've searched through the workhouse census in 1911 and there's no sign of her or her daughters.

Angelina btw marries under the name of Lena (I thought I'd had a breakthrough when I discovered that but it hasn't helped). This particular troublesome young lady isn't to be found (by me anyway) on any census since she was a baby.  I do have both of the daughters marriage certs -1914 and 1916ish (I'm away from my records) and had hoped to locate them with the addresses from there but they weren't there in 1911.

Any help, advice or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Unfortunately we cannot do 1911 look ups.  Lots of tips here though

Thanks for the link to the hints and tips, very useful.  Its not really a look up a such I'm requesting as I do have access to the census myself. OP

Kevin, the girls births are Alice 1885 and Angelina 1890.  Alice is with her brother in 1901 as [as Muire)

Thanks for trying Claire, yes that is the address my grandfather was born at in 1900 and married from and is the address given on Agnes' death.

 Hi,
I see you are looking for a Agnes Muir,my Mother Family were Muirs. The family came from Glasgow, she was born there, but the family moved to Dundee.
Maybe it would be worth trying the Scottish side of Rootchat, the Muirs are scattered all over Scotland,I have relations around the borders,so you might be lucky.
                                                                             Just a thought,
                                                                                               Regards

Thanks Tom but Agnes was a Laing by birth, she married William Muir.  He was.  born in Glasgow or at least it says that in one of the scottish census, i havent found his birth. But the family moved to Edinburgh and then William to Newcastle.

This doesn't help with your main problem, but the closest I can get to Angelina Muir in 1901 is a 10-year-old  Ann Muir who is a servant with a Dixon family in City Road. RG 13 / 4785/ 44/ 14

I can't see a birth of an Ann Muir in Newcastle nor can I see her on the 1891 census :-\
