Robert CARVER born Sunderland 1829?
« on: Monday 21 January 13 15:39 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on Robert Carver born around 1829 probably in Sunderland.

All I have so far is that he was a Mariner who married Sarah Wallace at Horton Church on 3 April 1850 while they were both living in Cowpen Quay, Northumberland.  I have the marriage certificate which states he is of full age and his father is Walter Carver, a Glazier.  Sarah was born in 1833 in Sunderland, and in the 1851 census is still in Cowpen on her own (presumably Robert is at sea).  In 1861 she is living in Sunderland with her parents Dent and Margaret Wallace and her son William George Carver born 1852.  She is down as married rather than a widow.  I know she remarried in 1866 to John  F Carr.

I can find no other records for Robert Carver, not any for his father Walter.  It may be they are not from the North East at all.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Carver seems to appear as Calver on some census entries

There is a death for a Maria Carver 2.6.1857  aged 61 at St Margarets Lowestoft giving an approx birthyear 1796

1841 for Lowestoft has a Maria Calver 45 plus son Samuel aged 10 living in Mutford, Lowestoft which links to parents Walter & Maria as per this IGI entry

Thank you for your efforts CaroleW, the results are very useful.

I had found Walter and Maria in the IGI but got no further with them, although I had a feeling they were a lead.  The baptism and census records are a great addition, particularly as William was a sailor.   I have a seaman's record for a Robert Carver from Lowestoft date of birth given as 1826.  When unemployed he's said to reside in Lowestoft but the ticket was issued at Newcastle so there is a north east connection.  There are several voyages recorded from 1845 the last being in 1851, which explains his absence from the census

I'll follow up your suggestion to look up the original parish entries from Suffolk.

Thanks again for your input.

Leo

Thank you again CaroleW

I tried FreeREG and discovered Baptism records from Lowestoft for 5 of Walter & Maria's children.  For the latter 3 his occupation is House Painter, but for the first 2 it is Glazier!  Result!  I also discoverd Walter's Baptism in 1787, which ties in with the burial record you provided of 1834 aged 47.  His baptism record also gave me the names of both parents.

Lots of gaps filled in now.   Brilliant!  Leo

For what it's worth, my Carver line originates in Norfolk in the area around the Broads and there are examples of Lowestoft born Carvers moving up to the North East. If you would like me to check my PAF file to see if there are any common entries, please send me the details. Your Robert is not in the file, but it is far from exhaustive.
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell

Hi Nick
Thanks for your message and sorry for the delay in replying.  I had put the Carvers on the back burner for a while as I’d reached a dead end so have had to refresh my memory about them.

Robert Carver from Lowestoft seems to have had two siblings who survived to adulthood- William, born 1822 and Samuel, born 1831.  William didn’t appear to have any children, and Samuel’s children all appear to have moved to London/Home counties.

Robert and Sarah appear to have had just one child (or only one that survived)
William George born 1852 who married Sarah Clarke in 1872.  They had three children.  However they seem to have parted and subsequent records are sketchy.  I can find no trace of William after the 1881 census until 1911 when he is living and working in Hull.  I have found a Cyril Carver born in Hull visiting William’s widowed daughter in Sunderland in 1911.  His age appears to be 13, therefore born about 1898, but it’s smudged and he may actually be 15 or possibly 10.

If you can add any further Carvers from Lowestoft who may be relevant, or add any information about William George and/or Cyril it would be greatly appreciated.
