If we are talking WW1, then please remember that about two-thirds of the service records were lost in a WW2 bombing raid! ::)

Did he die in WW1?
If so, try www.CWGC.org (Commonwealth War Graves Commission).

There is as medal card for a William Lyons in Notts and Derby Regiment (aka Sherwood Foresters)

Private
Numbers 2943 and 240815

No way of knowing if this is your chap though.  What makes you think he was in 6th Sherwood Foresters? Do you have some other info on him that makes you think this?

Number 240815 does appear to be a 6th Bn number

I found a site by searching for EYAM, this has photos of some of the WW1 soldiers and lists their rank and regiment but unfortunately for me no enlistment numbers

Hi

I presume it is this one.
http://places.wishful-thinking.org.uk/DBY/Eyam/WWI/portrait06.html#T2

Nice site ;D

He is just called Private W Lyons though. Are you trying to get his records so you can confirm or deny that he is your William James from Tarporley? That is not looking easy without any service records which don't appear to have survived. Perhaps there is more info in the book which the website took the info from? (unlikely or they would have put it on the website).
Maybe local papers of the time may have something about him. He appears to have survived the war so maybe not but you never know.

Or - Do you know for sure the man in the photo is your William?
