Death record
« on: Friday 18 January 13 21:04 GMT (UK) »
First time on this forum and apologies if this is outside normal rules protocol.

Question - I am in the UK and wondered whether it is possible for me to access BMD records for SA or, alternatively, request a 'look-up'.  Seek info on death of Ethel Linden Dimond sometime in the 1970s.

Thanks in advance.

Hi go to this link http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300qi?20130119015131ABA73B06%26FUNC%3DN in the first line type Dimond Ethel and enter, click on Result summary. One record appears, she was born a Parker, died in 1975 and her husband was James Harry. This file should contain her death certificate, family memebers etc.

To obtain pictures of documents held in the National Archives. Go to http://www.eggsa.org and select Content --> On Line Shop --> order Archive documents.  Once you have selected the currency, select "Enter the Shop" and then select "Archive photos" (in yellow on the blue band) and follow the instructions. They are only able to organise the photographing of documents from the South African Archives at Pretoria (TAB), Bloemfontein (VAB), Pietermaritzburg (NAB) and Durban(TBD). Other archives such as KAB require a researcher to transcribe documents by hand as no copying by camera or photocopying is allowed. Rates are cheap especially if ordering from overseas.

Hope this helps regards Derek

Derek,

First, a big thank you for your reply and info. There is little doubt this is the right person as her maiden name was indeed Parker and husband James.
However, I'm unable to find the reference from the link you have provided.   When I click on this I am presented with 14 further link options, could you confirm the one I should choose please.
Alternatively, as I now have the year 1975 could you advise me where she was buried.  I am given to understand it was in Cape Town or nearby.

Regards

Hi Jolyn after you click on the link, a search page appears, type in Dimond Ethel and enter. One document should appear, click on result summary, one file is shown in blue, click on that file, it gives a basic outline of what the file contains. To view the contents you need to order the document through EGGSA. To view gravestones go to this link http://www.eggsa.org/welcome_e.htm scroll down till you see South African gravestone photos on the right, click on this button, scroll down till you see GAUTENG (this is the old Transvaal province). Now there are 2 pages of grave photo links. This is why I recommend ordering the death certificate first, it may tell you where she is buried, then you an look for a photo.

Cheers Derek

Derek,

Feel perhaps I'm seeing something different than you imagine when I click on your link.
Page is headed 'Select a database from those listed below' and there is a list of 14 options. Top of list is 'Data of the South African Genealogical on Gravestones' but entering data in that site brings no results?
Sorry to be a pain but can you assist further?

Hi OK appears the link is one step behind, by this I mean when you click on the link and it opens, 14 database options are shown, click on the RSA option, you should now be able to follow the rest of the steps.
