Help needed in finding newspaper/inquest report
« on: Friday 18 January 13 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Just for a change, the latest death certificate to arrive wasn't describing a Howe suicide or mental breakdown. This time it is a simple case of drowning.

I have been searching for a report on the death of Benjamin Howe, from Brightlingsea who drowned on September 30th 1869, when the boat Eliza Jane was upset by a gust of wind, off Harwich Harbour.

The inquest was held on October 12th and the coroner for Essex, Maldon, was Mr W. Codd. I feel sure the incident, or the inquest must have been reported somewhere.

If anyone is more adept at searching newspaper archives than I am, I'd really appreciate some help with this.

Many thanks,

Jen :)

Hi Jen,

Can't help with newspapers but have you asked if the Inquest file has survived in the county archives?

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/

Survival of these files is very patchy;  I found a London one for 1902 but another London one in 1914 had gone.

Good Luck!

Hi Jen.

Had a look at the Essex Standard but can't see a report of the drowning or inquest. But there are other reports re a Benjamin Howe of Brighlingsea.

If you have a library card for your local library you can see them in 19th Century British Library Newspapers link.

I'm guessing that you have found the report of Benjamin Howe's suicide in 1892. It was his father, also Benjamin, who drowned in 1869. ( what an unfortunate family this is!)  I do use the 19th century newspaper link but can see nothing at all about the drowning accident. I assumed it was my lack of skill in using appropriate search terms but maybe there wasn't a report. Maybe drowned sailors were just too commonplace to merit newspaper coverage?

NJ, I think I am going to have to give in and buy some SEAX credits. I have so much stuff to look for that it will probably be worthwhile. But having had three death certificates and a Scotland's People payment this month, it's going to have to wait!

Thanks both. :)
