I'm going to presume that you are just starting out on this adventure, of family history.

Do you have any Birth or Marriage certificates for your grandfather(s) going backwards.

I would avoid "Ancestry" trees until you are a lot more certain of your own history, they would more likely confuse & obstruct you at this stage.

If you need more help, just ask.

Thanks.
I'm very confident in the 1891 census that puts the family at Easthampton, Shobdon, and shows Mary Whittall b 1848 at Llanwnog.

(Must go to work now  :))

My best best advice in the circumstances is to contact a Mrs Tracy Care, it would seem she is doing a study of the surname Whittall.

She should be in more of a position to help you, than I can.

Hi Roy

If you look at the free website, www.northwalesbmd.org.uk , there is a marriage in 1868 of David Whittal (one L) to Mary Harris or Mary Haines at Llanwnog Parish Church. Strangely, this does not show on other searches, although www,freebmd.org.uk shows a marriage for John Whittal and Mary Harries (spelt with an E) in the Qtr ended Sep 1868 in Newtown district.
I would be inclined to order these certificates to confirm.
Best of luck

North Wales BMDs    http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk

Click on link and click on "North Wales BMDs" (assuming you prefer English??)
Use drop down menu for "Marriages 435,103 (Green button) and select "Search Marriages"
Click on "Search by name

Select date 1868
Surname - enter Whittall and also click on "Soundtex" button (Not "Exact)
Click on "Display results"

You can then click on "Match possible spouse"

The year 1868 "fits" with the period "How long married" that a David Whittall gives on the 1911 Census.

Well, I now have a copy of the marriage certificate for the marriage on July 1st, 1868, at Llanwnog of
David Whittal, res. Caersws, father John Whittal, mason, and
Mary Harris, res. Caersws, father Benjamin Mills, farmer..!
How can this be explained.. Mary was aged about 20, could she have been married before??
