Old Photo Dating and MAtching

Can anyone please help me to date the photo of the family. Firstly I think it is an earlier photo of the old man pictured. I need some help to match these photos, does anyone think they are the same man? The jaw/chin seems quite similar.
If I am right and these are the same man (my great great grandfather)then the family photo should be around 1888-91.
The photo was taken in Belfast. The bottom says Abernathy Studios (faded). this is only a copy so I don't know if there was anything on the back.
Any help much appreciated.

You're quite correct,the family photo is mid-late 1880's.

In my opinion the faces do look very similar so I would vote for yes, it's the same man.

I agree I think it's the same man - ears match, and distinctive cheekbones.

Here is another photo that I could use some help with. Firstly I need a date and then if anyone wants to venture an opinion of they are the same boys in that are in the original posting???
Again only a copy so nothing on the back to help. Likely taken in Belfast.

Could the two boys in your last picture be sons of one/both of the boys in your 1880's picture?
