Willmett Huxtable TILKE
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 11:51 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please advise me of any resources which may show my ancestor Willmett Huxtable TILKE, (born 1808 in Harpford, Devon) going to work as a Teacher in a school in Ireland.  She had returned to Devon, and emigrated to New Zealand (and then eventually on to South Australia) in 1840.  So, presume would have been in Ireland  in the years approx. 1828-1835??
Looking forward to some inspiration!  Cheers, Meredith

The information you are looking for is well before the start of civil registration in Ireland. It will also be next to impossible to search for records, if any exist, without a location. Seems quite strange that she would have gone from Devon, or even England, to work in Ireland in those days without a very good reason. What was her father's occupation? could he have had a job (in military perhaps?) that would have taken his family to Ireland?

Hi,
You may be aware of this but there is reference to a will of a Willmett Tilke of Aylesbeare in Devon dated 1813. See http://www.rootschat.com/links/0so4/

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Meredith had an earlier topic in 2008 (so even earlier than this one from 2013) and the wikitree information, and more, was posted-

Thank you to those who have picked up on my post again.  I really appreciate the input.  Wilmett (aka Ann) arrived in New Zealand in 1840 - she was very difficult to follow as she married there in 1841, then moved to Sydney, before coming by boat around to Adelaide, South Australia.
I still haven't found anything to support her story of teaching in Ireland, but doubt if I will ever find such evidence.
I have her parents' Will (Devon), and burial records for Newton Poppleford.  So not sure there's anything more I could find.
Thanks again,  Meredith.

As I said, you need to look in the British Parliamentary Papers. At various points in time they published returns of all teachers in Ireland. Whether there are returns for the time period you are interested in I don't know, but there may be.

Oh I'm sorry, I don't understand where I need to go to look at Parliamentary Papers.  I live in Adelaide, South Australia, so will need to find them online.  Can you please give me a clue?
We would have returned to the UK for another holiday/research exercise, but of course are stuck here at home for the forseeable future!
thanks for your advice,  Meredith
