Lanarkshire Miners from Lithuania 1880-1900
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 05:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for any information on my grandparents, who although were married in Bellshill, 31/8/1901, originally came from Lithuania, to work in the mines.
Names are:
GGF :Jurzas Mercinkiawicz
GGM:Brigite Rutkauckiute

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Bill

The marriage is on SP as

1901 MARCINKIAWICZ MOTEYUS and RUTKAUCKUTIE BRIGITA at BELLSHILL /LANARK

Could this be the family on the 1911 census index?

1911 MERKEVICZE MOTEUSIA Male aged 50 at BELLSHILL /LANARK

There is a social club for Lithuanians in Mossend in Bellshill. Don;t know if there any contact details for the club  but it is active and seems to have been going for a very long time. A friend of mine's late mother was of Lithuanian extraction so I have been to social events there.

The local RC church for the area is Holy Family, Mossend, which given the strong links may have some records of interest.

Point of contact for the church would probably be Diocese of Motherwell, Cathedral House,31 Coursington Road, Motherwell, Lanarkshire Tel; 01698 258116 ( you would have to figure out international Dialling codes.

Best of luck, hope it works out.

Hi Sancti,

Many thanks,

It appears correct, no doubt difference in spelling from what I had was "lost in translation"

I've had difficulty finding additional info.

Once again, many thanks,

Bill

Hi Maxcam,

Yes, I have heard about this from reading about some of the Lithuanian migrants, but as I am new to Genealogy, it didn't occur to me. Hopefully I will pick up from these tips.

Many thanks, I will follow this lead up.

Bill if you view the marriage certificate it will provide the names of the bride and groom's parents

The 1911 census will show where the family lived and the names/ages of children

This 1911 record is unlikely to be the man from the 1901 marriage as he was aged 20 in 1901 !

Despite some expert use of wildcards, I can't immediately find a better 1911 census record ...............

Be aware that such men, born in Lithuania, were Russian nationals, who were forced to return to Russia and serve in the Russian Army in WWI.

Their wives and kids in Scotland were left with no support from the UK authorities, and many of them were "shipped back" to Russia <sad g>
