Just found your post while doing a google search for my grandfathers name (Marcinkewicz) & a new finding from the ship passenger lists which is for my great grandparents and their place of residence we think might be Liudvinavas.  I have been doing extensive research on both my grandmother and grandfathers families. Have alot of information on my grandmothers side now (Simanavicius) but not so much on my grandfathers. I'm just wondering if theres any connection because of the following: the name is very similar (like you i've found multiple spellings!). I live in Scotland - my grandfather and his father and brothers where all miners in Newtongrange but had a definate connection with Bellshill (i have an old photograph with 2 men and the name and address on the back is someone in Bellshill- not Marcinkewicz though). And of course the place of birth on my great grandfathers ship passenger record is Liudvinas (its written in German & hard to read but so far a few Lithuanians have both suggested that it could be Liudvinas). My great grandparents where Victor and Eva Marcinkewicz and my grandfather was Anthony (Anton) Marcinkewicz (changed to Mitchell) Do you have any old photographs (to see if theres any similarities) or do you know of any connection with Newtongrange (Newbattle)? Hope this makes sense 😳

Thanks, Its in German.so place names written as they would be known.in German. I've got it posted on a Lithuanian genealogy site as they're used to seeing the ship passenger lists (& deciphering them) all the time (& a large number of them.live in Lithuania so know of villages which existed in the early 1900's some of which either dont exist or have different names now - some used to be part of Poland). The handwritten lists are illegible so got to rely on.whats been typed up on.ancestry website.

I have found very little in regards to my Fathers side ( Marcinkewicz). Yes, there are many variations to that Surname. My Father and his brothers changed their name to Smith ( go figure). I was told that when the Lithuanians went to work in the mines there was difficulty in pronouncing these names, so they were given names like Smith and Brown, to make it easier. (Not sure if this is correct.) So I guess they just kept them throughout their lives. I have searched both in the UK and USA, where a lot of them, like my Grandfather, did go, but returned to Scotland to work. As regards my family, as I said very little found Fathers name Franciskas Marcinkiawicz ( Frank Smith) GFN Jurzas Marcinkawicz GMMN Brigita Rutauckiute. As said before ,variations in spelling have made it difficult. I am in Australia, I was born in Bellshill.

If you have any info that may help me I would be greatly appreciated.
