ABBEY CRESCENT off Fountains Road, Hull - old map required please
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 12:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
Does anyone have an old map that would show where Abbey Crescent off Fountains Road was sited please.

This address has been found on WW1 Service Records and known to someone for their family history, but I cannot find it on google maps so assume the area was "cleared" at some point.

I have found this reference to that area, but still no idea where it was sited:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/turning-earth/family_history_notes/hull_addresses_abbey_crescent.htm

Kind regards

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and type in Kingston upon Hull. In co-ordinates type 509139 and 430238 then go to the 1892 town plan at the side and click on enlarge Albany cres should be clearly marked, you will need to zoom in to enlarge.
Hope this helps
Sorry just reread your post i meant Abbey cres  :o

Thanks mumjo
Found it very easily.
It looks like the Cottingham Drain ran in front of Abbey Crescent, has been piped and covered over,  this relates to what I have been told that a dyke was nearby and at times it was very smelly to live there  :-X
I also see now that the Endeavour School is built upon the Sculcoates Workhouse/Infirmary land, now did they have burials upon that land, as this person seems to remember there was graves within the area of Abbey Crescent ???
I also see across from Sculcoates Workhouse is All Saint's Church, did they have a burial ground there ???

The person I am helping now lives in New Zealand, but his Nanna lived at Abbey Crescent and he visited there very often when a young boy.

Perhaps someone else will be able to answer you, I don't know the area at all, although my ancestors came from Hull. Old maps is very usefull for finding long demolished streets (as long as you have a rough idea where it would have been) and the town has a street map.

Hi Wendy

There is an area within Sculcoates cemetery (north side) that has graves for Sculcoates workhouse residents, I believe there are 3 people in each grave, not necessarily related.

Hi Wendy
Your post about Fountain Rd.(no s on Fountain) brought back memories for me I lived on this road during the whole of the 1950s. Fountain Road was off Beverley Rd. if you walkied on the left-hand side for about 400 yards Cottingham drain ran under the road the terrace at the side of the drain was called Wainfleet terrace this consisted of probably 30 or 40 houses after which there was an alleyway which led to the next street which was Seaton Street. After the houses was Abbey Crecent so you would walk straight down Wainfleet Terrace and the you would find Abbey Crescent.
None of the houses are there now as the whole area has been re-developed. Hope this is of help to you, regards kenmeeks

Hi Wendy,   Sorry cant help with the names you mentioned. I do`nt know if you live in Hull but I can place three cemeteries in the wincolmlee area:-  At the junction of Bankside & Air Street there is a cemetry which was part of St. Marys Church, this church was demolished many years ago and a new one was built on Sculcoates Lane (probably about half a mile away) however the cemetry is still there. Along Sculcoates lane the are two cemeteries immediately opposite each other, we actually found my wifes great grandparents grave in the cemetery on the right hand side of the road. These cemeteries are obviously very old and overgrown. The only other one that I know in that area is at St. Johns in Clough Road. hope this is of help regards Kenmeeks

Thanks kenmeeks
I have learned something today, old disused cemeteries in Hull, always worthwhile knowing about.
