Berwick and Scotland
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 06:43 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm that Berwick was under Scottish control between 1328 to 1338, please? I'd also like to know what the situation was in 1371 regarding North berwick.
Cheers,
Bob

Between 1315 and 1318, Scottish armies, sometimes with the help of Flemish and German privateers, besieged and blockaded the town, finally invading and capturing it in April 1318.
England retook Berwick some time shortly after the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

You asked about North Berwick in 1371.  It is in the county of East Lothian (not near Berwick on Tweed) and would have been part of the Kingdom of Scotland. Much earlier, before AD1000, it would have been part of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria (which ran from the Humber to the Forth) but it was never part of England (which took over the southern parts of Northumbria from the Tweed southwards).
