That letter is not an 'f', but a 'long s', which looks very like an 'f'.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Great to read about a link to Covesea back to the 1600s. Maryland/Merryton appears to be Merrayton on the 1856-1891 Ordinance Map. It was located east of Sweethillock farm and south of Covesea, probably where the RAF base is now. There is not likely a connection from the Layings of the 1600s to my family as my g-grandfather was a farm servant who moved to the area from Knockando where he was born. Enjoyed seeng this thread continuing.
