Please can I put in a request for anyone finding a William Burgess birth or baptism within Essex in the year 1763 to notify me.
In 1841 he states 'born in county' but we have only found the following entry in the Romford area.
William, son of James & Mary Burgess, christened at Barking 1763.   No birth details but likely to be him.
We have one born in Great Oakley, who seems to have stayed in that area, also one in Limehouse and another in Standon (out of county again)  Did wonder whether the ennumerator was told Standon and thought he heard Stondon(Massey).
Other details: He married Sarah Staines at Romford in 1788 and lived at Noak Hill.  His son, William II owned a property at Bourne Bridge, Stapleford Abbotts.  There are several families in the area and others have come in from the Roding Valley, Arkesden and Great Oakley areas but as yet none of the family has been able to trace him.   Any help welcome!

Have you seen their marriage entry, do the witnesses give any clues?

Which church did they marry in?

Married at Romford, St. Edward 20/2/1788.  She was born 1767, Harold Hill, Sarah daughter of William Staines and Sarah Eve, he was born 1763 and 'from Noak Hill'.  Was unable to get further details from Romford or Noak Hill (some of records lost in church transfer) when we last tried.  He died in 1842, fortunately completing the 1841 census first and was known to be a carpenter.  Supposedly buried at South Weald but I didn't find that either.  Known to be friendly with Lord & Lady Neave of Dagnams.

Thank you for that Sue.  That confirms the burial date.  he died on 15th at Noak Hill. The relative who told me also said his grave was to the left of the church porch but the verger couldn't find it when we visited years back.  Would also like to have found some earlier Burgess burial there, only a couple of later ones from Brentwood discovered.   We thought they might have confused the church wiith St Thomas' where there is a surviving memorial to a James & Phillis.

John & Elizabeth Staines (nee Bunting) would have been brother and sister in law, probably living at Spice Pitts Farm at the time.

I have it that a William Staines was the tenant of Spice Pitts Farm Noak Hill circa1786. I also have information on an Elizabeth Bunting and her sister Mary who were mentioned in the will of a Sarah Miller in 1779 as are the parents of Elizabeth and Mary, all (except Sarah Miller) were living at Noak Hill at the time. If you are interested I can copy off what I have on my data base for you.

Thank you for this offer.  I have Mary Ramsey as William the younger's wife and a note about Elizabeth and Mary Bunting but that is all.  The main line I am stuck on is the William Burgess one, married to Sarah Staines in Romford 1788 and born 'in county' according to 1841 census.

Hi Yvonne, the information below is taken from my own Noak Hill names data base which I have been collating for some years now.

"Robert Bunting. Noak Hill resident 1770’s. Married Elizabeth (?). Father of Mary and Elizabeth Bunting. Mentioned in the will of Sarah Miller of Hare Street dated 13th August 1779. Employed as a labourer.

Elizabeth Bunting. Noak Hill resident 1770’s. Married to Robert Bunting.
Mother of Mary and Elizabeth Bunting. Mentioned in the will of Sarah Miller of Hare Street dated 13th August 1779 where she was bequeathed the sum of five pounds.

Elizabeth Bunting. Noak Hill resident 1770’s. Daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Bunting. Sister of Mary Bunting. Mentioned in the will of Sarah Miller of Hare Street dated 13th August 1779 where she and her sister, Mary were jointly bequeathed the house and gardens of Sarah Miller. Elizabeth shared with her sister a silver pepper box, a pair of silver salts, a white enamelled ring, all of Sarah Miller’s wearing apparel, her household linen and the rest of her household furniture that had not be already bequeathed to others.

Mary Bunting. Noak Hill resident 1770’s. Daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Bunting. Sister of Elizabeth Bunting. Mentioned in the will of Sarah Miller of Hare Street dated 13th August 1779 where she and her sister, Elizabeth were jointly bequeathed the house and gardens of Sarah Miller. Mary was also bequeathed the best chairs with an easy chair, a little bed, silver teaspoons, tongs, and oval table and a round table. She also shared with her sister a silver pepper box, a pair of silver salts, a white enamelled ring, all of Sarah Miller’s wearing apparel, her household linen and the rest of her household furniture that had not be already bequeathed to others."

It may be of no help to you in the way of your research but it all adds to the pot.
