I kinda guessed the next step would have to be getting the marriage doc.  What I was concerned about was perhaps having to get several until I found the correct one.
I knew I would only get fathers name but that will be enough to determine the correct earlier census records as on each of the possibilities, the 'HEAD' has a different forename.  A more accurate age for James will help also.

If 2 or more marriages are registered on the same day they will all have the same index number.
In this case 2 marriages were registered so you get 4 names all with the same number.
When ordering you will have to give one of the names + the rest of the info. as given.
I can't see James jumping out pre 1881 so it would be interesting to see who his father was.

As Alfred is your direct line, I would definitely get his birth certificate to confirm parents names and just to enjoy having it.... but I think you are on the right track with the Sept quarter 1877 marriage registered Aston.  Elizabeth's brother Charles WILSON is with them on the census as well as mother in law and you can see unmarried Elizabeth in 1871 with mother Mary and brother Charles in Coventry.

To be honest, you're duplicating some searches I've already done.
I appreciate it, but I wouldn't want any of you to spend any more of your time on this for me.
You've successfully answered my main query, which was the direction I should go in and identifying the correct marriage of James and Elizabeth.
