SWEDISH marriage records: Uddevalla, 1820
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Do early C19th Swedish marriage records give parents' names?

I have a place (Uddevalla, Bohuslan) and a date (1st Dec 1820) for the wedding, but what I really need to know is the name of the groom's father.

And if the marriage record is worth pursuing for its detail, how would I access it?

Many thanks for any advice.

Hi!

One single marriage in Uddevall Dec 1, 1820.

Hans Peter Lingren to Johanna Carolina Florin.

He was a bookkeeper from Gothenburg (+ something I can't translate)

Unfortunately no more info,

Jan in Norway

Many thanks for looking this up, Jan.

I shall have to think up another way to track down his parents!

If you should have any ideas, the birth date recorded for Hans Petter Lindgren was 13th of February 1783.

The earliest record I can find of him is in the Gothenburg directory for 1809, when Hans Petter was living at Barlastkajen, Masthugget.

He died on the 18th of January 1855 and was buried in Goteborg's Stampen Cemetery.

Thank you again for you kind interest.

Hi,

I think I have found your Hans Peter Lindgren. In the moving records of Gothenburg Gustavi (domkyrko) parish vol B:2 (1795-1802) p56, there is a note about a "sjöman", sailor, Hans Peter Lindgren, b. 1783, who moves to the parish from Norrköping. He is said to be born in "Westervik" or Västervik with a modern spelling.

In the birth records for Västervik, vol C:5 (1770-1804) p171, you find Hans Peter born on Feb 13, 1783, the son of "kronobränneriinspectoren" Carl Peter Lindgren and his wife Margareta Lorentzon. You find the family in the husförhördlängd for Västervik (I only checked 1787-1799) here:

AI:6 1787-1789 p104 (Östra kvarteret No 3)
AI:7 1790-1791 p132 (Östra kvarteret No 3)
AI:8 1792-1797 p140 (Östra kvarteret No 155)
AI:9 1797-1799 p62 (Östra kvarteret No 92&93)
AI:9 1797-1799 p11 (Östra kvarteret No 10) -Hans Peter is not noted here

Hans Peter moves to Norrköping on July, 31 1799, according to Västervik moving records, vol BI:1 (1724-1817), page 117, # 40, which probably explains why he isn't noted with his family in the husförhörslängd AI:9 on page 11.

His occupation, when he moves from Västervik, is "skrifvare", a clerk, so why he is noted as a sailor when he moves to Gothenburg is a bit bewildering. The piece that ties this Hans Peter with "your" Hans Peter, though, is the estate inventory for his mother, Margareta Lorentzon, which you find in the court records for Västervik rådshusrätt och magistrat, vol FI:25 (1818-1822) p649 which says "... the late Mrs. Margareta Lorentzen, who, together with the widower, leaves the sons "Wågskrifvaren" in Gothenburg Hans Peter Lindgren...". You have the division of the estate on p691 and on p692 is probabably the signature of Carl Peter Lindgren.

You find the estate inventory of Carl Peter Lindgren in vol FI:25 (1818-1822), pp965-997 (though he is called Johan Peter Lindgren for some reason), and that is an amazing piece. Here you can see, among other things, a list of the furnitures in each room of his house, even the contents of the pantry (well, at least barrels and bottles, coffee-mill and such) is specified!

Carl Peter is said to be born in "Hvena", nowadays Vena, parish and his wife Margareta Lorentzon is mentioned in an estate inventory after her mother Christina Lorentzon (Västervik rådshusrätt och magistrat, vol FI:20, 1798-1803, p405) and her father Peter Lorentzon (Västervik rådshusrätt och magistrat, vol FI:9, 1752-1757, p1163), so hopefully you will be able to go much further in your resarch.

Idllse, I am astonished and delighted!  I cannot thank you enough for your incredible amount of work on my query.  I am rather overwhelmed.  This detail really is beyond imagination. Thank you.

I have been pushing forwards on Hans Petter Lindgren in the Gothenburg records, where he first appears in 1809 when living at Barlastkajen, Masthugget.  Subsequently, his career was entirely associated with customs, progressing from kontröller to våginspektor and wågonbokhållare ('wagon bookkeeper'?).

By 1820 - the year he married at Uddevalla - he had moved into the centre of the city, to number 10, Krykogatan.  It was here that his four children were born.

In 1836, he was elected to be a member of Gothenburg’s Royal Bachelor’s Club.

My 3+great grandfather, Adolphus Lindgren, purchased the grave of Hans Petter's family in Stampen Cemetery and now I know they were first cousins, as Carl Petter Lindgren (born 1752, Vena) was Adolphus's uncle.

Thank you, thank you again!  May your extraordinary generosity be rewarded tenfold!

Idllse, as I am obviously eager to pursue these leads myself, may I ask whether you accessed these records on-line, or in the record office itself?

Many thanks indeed.

Hi,

Sorry for my late reply; my internet connection gave up and where I live does not rate among the top places to be served first when problems arise.

I accessed the records online. I have a subscription on ArkivDigital and SVAR, though I mostly use AD for my research, since the image quality is much better there than on SVAR (I have the latter one for tax records, some newer church records and other things that AD don't have).

Glad to be able to help you. Hope you can go further with what I found!

Cheers,
/Lars

Sometimes throughout the year, the Swedish digital archives have free access to their records otherwise you can subscribe for a short time period. http://www.arkivdigital.net/
