Watling Street - circa 1870
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 00:28 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my mums maternal family history - she knows little of this side of the family despite living with her maternal grandfather and aunt in Ireland for a few years during WW2.

I have managed to locate them on the 1901 and 1911 census on South Circular Road and from that information found her maternal G Grandfather, his wife and children. I am finding it difficult to go further back as the names are quite common (possibly an understatement!!) - family name is Maguire and her Grandfather was John, G grandfather Patrick - so I thought I'd try to find out more about what their lives would've been like. The baptism record of mums Great Aunt shows they lived at 43 Watling Street in the early 1870's.

I've checked Thoms for 1862 and a skinner lived at 43, 42 is described as Tenements; many others in the area are involved in skinning and tanning. Can anybody point me in the direction of any websites that would help me build a picture of what life would be like in this area at that time.
Many Thanks,
Carra

If you're sure that the family of Patrick Maguire of Watling St is definitely your family, including these children:

and these:

then this appears to be Patrick and Elizabeth's marriage in 1870:

I can see references elsewhere to a John Halbert skinner in Watling St but I'll post later if you don't have them.

Hi johnjensen,
Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I'm as sure as I can be that this is the family; Patricks son John would be my G Grandfather - I have found John in the 1901 census and from that his marriage record and from that his parents names. I've checked other possibles but ruled all out for various reasons. There also seems to be some circumstantial evidence around names, work locations etc, all of which leads me to believe this is the right family. I have been unable to locate any references to John Halbert skinner so would be grateful if you could assist with this.
Kind Regards,
Carra

Hi Louise,
I've only been researching the Irish side of my family for the last couple of months and had little to go on for the Maguires so I'd be really interested to learn more. Patrick's brother John was my mums 'pop' (grandfather) and she lived with him, and her aunt, for quite a few years during WW2. Firstly in Dublin, and latterly in Dalkey. Despite this we know relatively little about this side of the family.

Hi this is a longshot as quite some time has passed since these posts were made.  I am also related to Maguires of Watling Street Dublin.  My great great grandfather was John Halbert, a skinner and leather dresser, his wife was Mary Ward Halbert, died at 44 Watling Street 1874.   Hope its not too late to make contact as I have been trying for years to research this part of my family.  Thank you.
