Casknett & Jones Ltd (Shoe Factory)
« on: Saturday 12 January 13 16:09 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon

Would anyone have any knowledge of a company which was named as Casknett & Jones a Shoe Manufacturer in Northampton.

For some reason I entered this company name onto one of my Great Grandfathers family tree record working there as a clerk in 1901 and have no idea where I found the information.

According to the 1901 census he lived in Oliver Street, Northampton which I know is correct and also listed as a Clerk, Shoe Manufacturer but no company name.

Best regards

the following pdf may give you some clues >

http://cms.walsall.gov.uk/LeatherMuseum/fhr/biblio.pdf

I would consider contacting the Leather Musuem... regarding your Northamptonshire factory   .. maybe someone there maybe able to assist

I had a scout around but found nort...

Maybe there are some advertisements in British Newspaper Archive, for which the index can searched  ( i would use advanced search and put it in a phrase)   or contact Northamptonshire Archives or similiar

Maybe one could also make enquiries as to old directories.....

Sorry cant be of more help...

 :)

Thanks for that Fastfusion, I will try your ideas.

It does annoy me when I do that sort of thing,  you find a bit of info and update a record and then forget to put down the source of information.

Oh well hopefully will find something somewhere.

Hi David.

Happy New Year.  :)

I have looked through some directories I have and the only mention of any name
similar to the one you note is this one.

Caulcutt W E, 75, Oliver Street, Boot and Shoe Manfrs.

One to keep in mind.

Hi David.

I have been pondering with Hubby on the firm you could mean as he was in the shoe trade
(we met at Barratts) and I think the only firm that came to mind straight away was
Crockett & Jones who had a factory in Perry Street.

As they started in business in the town of Northampton in the late 19th Century do you
think it could be them.

Afternoon Sandy

I am certain that you have cracked the nut on this one, Oliver St and Perry St are just under a mile apart and well within walking distance to go to work everyday in and around 1901.

Interestingly my Gr Grandfather worked as a clerk from at least the age of 18 (1881 census) and right up to the 1911 census. again living within walking distance to Perry St. He lived in Lawrence St at the age of 18, Charles St at the age of 28 and then married and moved to Oliver St. Died at the age of 60 and could have still been working there up to that time.

Perhaps I will make contact with Crockett & Jones to see if they have kept any old employee records
dating that far back.

Once again thank you for the amount time you have spent on this query and I will keep you posted on any updates from C&J

Kind regards

David

Evening Sandy

It just goes to prove that if you wait long enough (it's been nearly 8 years) that I can now confirm the answer you gave me then was right. My Great Grandfather did work for Crockett & Jones as per the obituary posted by Cuffie81, see attachment
