James Allan was born in 1864 Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, son of John and Margaret Allan. He came to the USA in 1888. His wife Jean F. Allan ( MS unknown at present) stated on census forms that she came to the USA in 1891. In the 1930 US census they had been married for 38 years and were living in San Francisco. They were there as well in 1920, 1910 and 1900 but not always at the same address in SF. James ran a wholesale butchershop. I cannot find them in the 1940 census. I tried to search for them in the California Death Index 1930-1939 found at Familysearch.com but the relevant pages seems to be missing.
I would appreciate any help
Kind regards, Nan

Hi Nan,

It looks as if Jean was Jean /Harvie (rather than Harvice)  The first born son was James Harvey Crawford Allan - here is his marriage in 1914:-

You can try looking in city directories, which sometimes have a date of death or list the wife as a widow.  This can help narrow down the time frame.  There are some free San Francisco city directories here - http://www.donslist.net/PGHLookups/Dir1Win.shtml

I see a death for Jeanne Allan on the death index on familysearch.org.  It is on pg. 24 of the 1930-1939 records covering Aabel, Arnold-Hetterman, John.  The place of death was San Francisco (the code number for SF is 90), and the date of death was 24 Oct. 1932.  There are a few James Allans listed on the same page, and two died in San Francisco.  The most likely match seems to be the one who died 9 Sep. 1933, as his spouse's first initial was listed as J.

Sandra, thank you for finding Jean's maiden name. I have just started to research this part of my family tree. Previously my research was done on closer family members in Scotland. Jean's husband James is a first cousin 2x removed. I did have some information on their children from various census years but not their DOD.
Shellyesq, thank you for the link to the city directories. I have found more information there for James, Jean and their children. I fell really foolish that I didn't find the DOD for Jean and James in the California death index. I was even on p 24 BUT didn't drag the page far enough to one side to realize that there were 2 more pages from the index there. I had never used the index before and assumed that there were only 2 images per page. Lesson learned. Thank you.
