Elizabeth Ridley abt 1769 - 1847 - Tracing Her Parents
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 16:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace the family of an Elizabeth Ridley and was hoping that someone might be able to help.

This what I know about her and her family. Apologies for the length but I hope it might trigger something in someone with a better knowledge of Northumberland/Durham familes than me. I seem to go round in circles.

1. She married James Sillick at Houghton Le Spring 4 Feb 1794. Says she was of parish and groom from All Saints Newcastle. Licence issued 3 Feb says she was aged 24. Bond holder Richard Chambers currier of Newcastle.

2. The 1841 census shows her living at Pilgrim Street and indicates that she was born in Northumberland.

3. What I know about her family is taken from her will written in 1819.

She had a cousin Dorothy Ridley.
She had a brother William with children Elizabeth, Margaret, William and Thomas - will does not describe William as late. Some of the children may be under 21.
She had brother Thomas with children Ann, Hannah Carr, John, Mary, Thomas and William - will does not describe Thomas as late. Some of the children may be under 21.

Only marriage I can find that fits Hannah Carr is between Hannah Ridley and Milton Carr at Gateshead in 1816. Milton was from Slaley - he & Hannah lived in Slaley - he as a mason, then school master, then farmer - they had 10 children (one in 1815) - can be seen in 1841, 1851 and  1861.

The Hannah that married Milton Carr was born at Bladon/Stella from census data and marriage record.

4. The Sillick family moved from Devon to Newcastle - 3 brothers:
James b. 1764 Rewe - a currier in Newcastle - married Elizabeth - no children.
Other than family the following are mentioned in his will of 1811 - Thomas Marshall (trustee, executor, farmer of Chester Le Street) and only son Marshall, John Gilchrist (trustee, executor, sailmaker of Newcastle upon Tyne), William and Isabel Ainsley (children of Thomas of Great Barrington, farmer), Robert Tallentine (godson and apprentice), Nicholas Corbett (son of Richard of Gateshead), James Sillick Chambers (son of late Richard Chambers, tanner of Newcastle upon Tyne).
Abraham b. 1767 Rewe - another currier - married Selina Cownley in 1790 at St. Andrews  and Ann Kell in 1801 at All Saints - declared bankrupt 1815 - resumed trading and died 1842.
John Sillick b. 1769 Rewe - married Sarah Melhuish in Devon - living in Newcastle by 1832 - by the time he died clearly wealthy as living at Claremont Place in St Andrews - 3 children as follows:
James Sillick 1796 - 1878 - lived at Claremont Place - an alderman, magistrate, currier and landowner (one of main land holders in parish of Slaley) - married Mary Elder 1829.
Abraham Sillick 1800 - 1820
Sarah Elizabeth Sillick 1811 - 1885
- married William Mountain (wire manufacturer) and then Christopher Thomson (Vicar of Walker)

Thanks

Hello

I have discovered who Elizabeth was born to.

Parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Ridley of The Banks, Haltwhistle. No marriage confirmed.

Elizabeth c. 18 Apr 1770
William c. 11 un 1772
Thomas c. 10 Sep 1774

Thomas 1770 went on to marry Barbara Snowball 16 Dec 1794 at Oviingham
They lived at Birches Nook nr. Bywell.
William 1772 - not sure who he is, but possibly maerried Ann Walton at Bywell St Peters and was a farmer at Acomb.
